John 'Boots' Wuest, star athlete
John "Boots" Wuest was a Northern Kentucky football legend.
He was also a loyal family man who loved children, says his daughter, Sandra Hawk of Fort Thomas.
Mr. Wuest, 85, of Highland Heights, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
"I'm always getting people who come up to me. They all remember him for his athletic skills, " says Ms. Hawk. One admirer called Mr. Wuest "one of the toughest guys he's ever met, " Ms. Hawk says.
Mr. Wuest is considered to be one of Bellevue High School's all-time great athletes. He lettered for four years in football as one of the school's best fullbacks ever, four years in track, three years in basketball and two years in baseball.
He went to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he also played football and again became an outstanding fullback, helping the Miami Redskins win a couple of Buckeye Conference championships. He later became an assistant football coach at Bellevue. In 1984, he was one of the first inductees into the Northern Kentucky High School Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.
During World War II, Mr. Wuest served in North Africa and Southern France. He saw action and was awarded four Bronze Stars for valor.
After the war, he worked at Bavarian Brewery and later was a sales manager with Pharo Distributing until he retired in 1980.
He was a member of Newport Elks and Bellevue Vets.
Mr. Wuest was a great father, Ms. Hawk says. She says she remembers often playing football as a youngster and remembers thinking it odd that other girls couldn't kick a football.
Mr. Wuest was concerned for others and never complained, his daughter said.
In addition to Ms. Hawk, Mr. Wuest's survivors include his wife, Martha Wuest; daughter Christine Wuest, both of Fort Thomas; a son, John "Rocky" Wuest of Fort Wright; a sister, Margaret Kessling of Cincinnati; and one grandchild.
