Edwin K. Burton, educator in Newport
Edwin K. Burton's former students always told him how he had made a difference in their lives.
Mr. Burton spent nearly 40 years in the Newport school system as a teacher, coach, principal and assistant superintendent.
"He ran into former students everywhere, " said his daughter, Tedy Burton of Cold Spring. "He was pretty well loved by his students.
"I have been with him when fellows, now in their 60s, would get very emotional, with tears in their eyes, when they talked to him. They would say, 'Mr. Burton, you helped me so much.' They liked to tell about their success stories and how he was a good coach."
Mr. Burton, 84, of Fort Thomas, died at 5:55 a.m. Dec. 7 at the Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. His wife, Barbara B'Hymer Burton, died in 1998.
Mr. Burton loved all sports, especially golf and football, his daughter said.
He also was an excellent dancer. In college, he taught ballroom dancing. When he served as a chaperon at the high school proms, a crowd always gathered around him.
"Kids would stop and just circle around my parents and watch them dance, " Tedy Burton said. "He was a wonderful, wonderful dancer."
Mr. Burton also taught his students lessons of life, his daughter said.
He stressed the importance of good manners, how to dress and how to act in public, she said.
Sometimes, he had to purchase clothing and shoes for his students, Ms. Burton said.
"He really cared about them, " she said.
Other survivors include a daughter Peggy Hamman of Snohomish, Wash.; son, Stevan Burton of Southgate; brother, John Burton of Vancouver, Wash.; and one granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Joseph William Arrowood, 61, of Alexandria, died Friday at his home.
He was a retired automobile assembler for General Motors, Norwood, Ohio, and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 358, Newport.
Survivors include his daughter, Vicki Adams of Alexandria; brothers, Sigel Arrowood of Burlington and George Arrowood of Tennessee; sisters, Jean Sprange, Lou Terry and Fay Arrowood, all of Burlington; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Robert E. Chambers, 72, of Covington, died Thursday at Lakeside Nursing Home, Highland Heights. He was retired from Donaldson Signs, formerly in Covington.
Survivors include his daughters, Bobbie Brock of Independence and Marlene R. Collins of Visalia; son, Rick Chambers; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Irvin Andy Cremeans, 53, of Bellevue, died at 6:35 a.m. Thursday at his home.
He was head of security at NSG Security Co., an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter No. 88 and Disabled American Veterans, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Martin Cremeans; a son, David Cremeans of Bellevue; his parents, Paul and Clara Tharpe of Cincinnati; and brothers, Ron Cremeans of Lexington, Don Cremeans of Virginia and Bill Cremeans of Dayton, Ohio.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Marilee Ferrel, 61, of Newport, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport.
She was a retired employee of the Federal Reserve Bank, Cincinnati.
Survivors include daughters, Jodie Ferrel of Newport, Jennifer Pangallo of Taylor Mill, Julie Riley of Grants Lick and Janice Robinson of Independence; sons, Thomas Ferrel of Margate, Fla., and Timothy Ferrel of New York; mother, Frieda "Boots" Beatsch of Southgate; brothers, Frank Beatsch of Alexandria, Raymond Beatsch, Robert Beatsch, William Beatsch and John Beatsch, all of Southgate, of Taylor Mill; sisters, Jane Combs of Independence and Anne Imhoff of Fort Thomas; and nine grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Jenny Lawrence, 70, of Maysville, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.
She was a shipping clerk for Waid Manufacturing, Maysville. Her husband, Charles William "Buddy" Lawrence, died in 1985.
Survivors include her sons, Ricky Lawrence of Orangeburg and Robbie Lawrence of Maysville; stepdaughter, Linda Purcell of Maysville; brothers, James Dugan of Aberdeen, Ohio, Billy Dugan of Ripley, Ohio, and Tony Dugan Jr. of Maysville; sisters, Mary Gilbert and Beulah Gatherwright, both of Manchester, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Melrose Dunn Lawrence, 73, of Dry Ridge, died at 9:10 p.m. Thursday at her home.
She was a retired bookkeeper for the Grant County Deposit Bank, Williamstown and a former real estate agent with Steger Realty, Williamstown, was a member of the Sherman Church of Christ, Dry Ridge.
Survivors include her husband, Marvin R. Lawrence of Dry Ridge; son, Dwight L. Lawrence of Florence; daughter, Danita J. Howell of Florence; brothers, Norman W. Dunn of Dry Ridge and Wendell R. Dunn of Mason, Ohio; sisters, Marge Marshall of Mesa, Ariz., and Marilyn Ransdell of Burlington; and three grandchildren.

Janice R. Meyer, 69, of Alexandria, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a music teacher for the Newport Public Schools, an organist for First Christian Church, Fort Thomas, and St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Fort Thomas, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 269 and a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include her stepson, Donald Meyer of Orlando, Fla., and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Sandra Jeaneen Robinson, 62, of Dry Ridge, died at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown.
She was a homemaker and a cook for the Grant County Jail. A son, Gary Wayne Robinson, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Mark Robinson of Sanders, Christopher Ray Robinson of Sherman, Tommy Edward Robinson of Dry Ridge, Timothy David Robinson of Independence, Kevin Douglas Robinson of Ghent, Jonathan Lee Robinson of Crittenden, and Gregory Michael Robinson and Douglas Bryan Robinson, both of Mount Zion; daughters, Tracy Lynne Huckeba of Frankfort, Patricia Michele Howard of Mount Zion and Ellen Jeaneen Kohler of Dry Ridge; brothers, Rodney Edward Pyles of Lexington and Daryl Pyles of Williamstown; sister, Darlene Osborne of Jonesville; and eight grandchildren.

George A. Roller, 79, of Fort Thomas, died at 2:25 a.m. Friday at the Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home.
He was a retired ink color matcher for the printing industry and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Alice E. Roller of Fort Thomas; sons, George Roller of Southgate, William C. Roller of Butler, David J. Roller of Melbourne, Gary R. Roller of Aurora, Ind., and Steven A. Roller of Alexandria; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Elizabeth Thomas, 93, of Owenton, died Thursday at Owenton Manor Nursing Home.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Owenton. Her husband, Allie Wood "Hap" Thomas, died in 1982.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street Location, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Nell J. Thornton, 73, of Walton, died Friday at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.
She was a retired cook for the Walton-Verona Schools and Caintuckee Restaurant, an EMT for the Walton Fire Department, a member of First Baptist Church, Walton, and a charter member and past president of the Walton Fire Department Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Jesse Thornton of Walton; daughter, Candace Thornton-Biddle of Louisville; son, Charles D. Thornton of Walton; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Dr. Edgar D. Wippermann, 78, of Lakeside Park, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a physician and surgeon specializing in ear, nose and throat diseases and was on staff at the former Booth Memorial Hospital in Covington and Florence, St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas, St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington, St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood, and University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park, former president of Greater Cincinnati Ear, Nose and Throat Society, and a former Regent at Northern Kentucky University.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn G. Wippermann of Lakeside Park; daughters, Dr. Ann W. Kummer of Edgewood and Amy S. Pearson of Sulphur Springs, Texas; son, Dr. David Wippermann of Greenwood, Ind.; brother, Don Wippermann of Denver, Colo.; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Monday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
