Gerald Eckler, funeral director
During his 29 years as a funeral director, Gerald Philip Eckler comforted hundreds of people in times of grief.
But Mr. Eckler's sense of humor was one of his most endearing qualities, said his nephew, Jon Stephenson.
"My uncle was just always a big teaser, " his nephew said. "He liked to tease everybody. . . . But he was a wonderful, caring man. When I was young my mom and dad were very poor, and he used to let me come down there and stay with them in the summer at the funeral home."
Mr. Eckler, 87, of Carrollton, died Monday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Louisville.
Mr. Eckler retired in 1975 after 29 years as a Carrollton funeral home owner, funeral director and embalmer. From 1946 through 1955 he was the owner and operator of Kipping and Eckler Funeral Home, which merged with Tandy Funeral Home in 1955. The funeral home later became Tandy-Eckler-Darnold Funeral Home, operated by Mr. Eckler and James Darnold until Mr. Eckler's retirement in 1975.
Mr. Eckler served with the hospital corps in the Philippines during World War II.
el, 2 He was a member of First Baptist Church of Carrollton. He was a former member of Carrollton Kiwanis Club and a charter member of Webster's Drug Store Coffee Club.
el, 2 Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Ruth T. Bingham Eckler; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Ray of Woodstock, Ga.; a brother, Don Eckler of Ghent; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, 809 Highland Ave., Carrollton.

Phyllis Anderson, 63, of Southgate, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
She was a waitress for the Green Derby restaurant in Newport for over 30 years.
Survivors include her daughters, Lisa Anderson and Melissa Davidson, both of Silver Grove; a son, Rick Anderson of Alexandria; sisters, Pearl Chadwell of Seymour, Ind., and Claudia Curry and Eva Jarvis, both of London; brothers, Carl Root, E. H. Root, Jimmy Root and Johnny Root, all of London; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Avis Baker, 85, of Grants Lick, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a member of the Grants Lick Baptist Church. Her husband, Arthur Baker, and a son, Arthur Garrett Baker, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Anna Burch of Grants Lick, Yvonne Mullins of Alexandria, Beverly Waldemeyer of Cumming, Ga., Norma Hafer of California and Freda Clair of Port Lucy, Fla.; sons, Hal Baker of Verona and Robert Daniel Baker of California; sisters, Josephine Hall of Trenton, Ohio, and Forestine Fallon of Lexington; a brother, Robert Little of Mount Sterling; 19 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.
Bradford H. Buckshorn, 91, of Signal Mountain, Tenn., died Saturday at his winter home in Lakeland, Fla. He was retired from the Norfolk Southern Communications Department and a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Buckshorn; daughters, Barbara Carrier of Satellite Beach, Fla., Beverly Brewer of Davenport, Fla., and Bonnie Coolidge of Dayton, Ohio; a son, Bradford H. Buckshorn Jr. of Roswell, Ga.; a sister, Vivian Ankenbauer of Covington; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home, Chattanooga, Tenn. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Charles Melvin Buechel, 71, of Fort Thomas, died at 11:03 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
He was the past owner/operator of Buechel Brothers Grocery, Newport; past owner/operator of the Rankin-Buechel Real Estate Company, Erlanger; and an admission ticket collector at Turfway Park, Florence.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Smalling Buechel; daughters, Carol Weber of Fort Wright, Connie Cahill of Taylor Mill, and Cathy Weber and Chris Franxman, both of Burlington; a son Chuck Buechel of Lexington; brothers, Jack Buechel of Fort Mitchell, Rob Buechel of Wilder, Roy Buechel of Latonia, Jim Buechel of Fort Thomas, Richard Buechel of Southgate and Bill Buechel of Union; and 12 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. James "Jesse" Chaplin, 30, of Bromley, died Saturday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a former stock clerk for IGA and a member of Crescent Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Fahnestock Chaplin; sons, Jesse Frank Chaplin and Dustin Leon Chaplin, both of Demossville, and James Tyler Chaplin and Duke Hunter Chaplin, both of Bromley; his mother, Ina Jane Martin of Bromley; his father, Melvin Chaplin; brothers, Harvey Frank Leonard Martin Jr. of Ludlow and Jeff Martin of Covington; sisters, Mary Jent of Bellevue, Pam Hatton of Newport, and Martha Miracle, Ina Martin and Jackie Martin, all of Bromley.

Marie Craycraft, 94, of Ludlow, died at 7 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Cente in Covington. She was a retired production worker for Clopay Corporation, Cincinnati. Her first husband, Walter Perry, died in 1953. Her second husband, Howard Craycraft, died in 1962. A son, Walter "Lefty" Perry, died in 1970.
Survivors include a grandson, Scott Bradley Perry of Ludlow; a granddaughter, Tracy Susan Hamilton of Fort Wright; and great-granddaughter, Stefanie Hamilton of Fort Wright.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Alice L. Beverly Doan, 84, of Florence, died at 7:25 a.m. Monday at Woodspoint Care Center in Florence. She was a bookkeeper and teller at First National Bank, Covington, and a member of Lakeside Christian Church, Lakeside Park. Her husband, Chester Doan, died in February.
Survivors include a niece, Barbara Ann Sumner of Covington; and a nephew, Marvin Martin of Arizona.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lakeside Christian Church. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church. Jaunita Dunaway, 80, of Dayton, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a seamstress for Saturday Knight Limited, Cincinnati, a member of Dayton Eagles and Daughters of America, and past president of the Seamstress Union.
Survivors include a son, James Dunaway of Dayton; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Kendall O. Flannery, 60, of Newport, died Friday at the Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. He was a skycap for Delta Airlines.
Survivors include brothers, Michael Flannery of Cold Spring and Herschel K. Flannery Jr. of Dickson, Tenn.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Mary A. O'Connell Kelly, 85, of Lakeside Park, died at 7:35 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell, Women's Auxiliary at St. Charles Care Center, Covington; and she was a volunteer at the Parish Kitchen, Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Robert J. Kelly; a son, Kevin J. Kelly of Harrison, Ohio; a sister, Rita Benz of Sarasota, Fla.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

George E. Mitchell, 84, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a machinist for Panama Canal Co. His wife, Beulah Janet Mitchell, died in 1999.
Survivors include a son, Brent Mitchell of Florence; sisters, Barbara Mitchell and Vera Vennoit, both of Saco, Maine; a brother, Milton Mitchell of Saco, Maine; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
No services are planned. Burial will be in Pittsfield, Mass., Cemetery. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Mary Eileen Morris, 80, of Fort Wright, died at 12:20 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit in Covington.
She was a retired clerk for the IRS, Covington, and a member of First United Methodist Church, Covington where she served on the Board of Directors for Day Care as the secretary and treasurer.
Survivors include her husband, Robert B. Morris; a son, Dr. James Morris of Fort Wright; a daughter, Beverly Martin of Ludlow; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Linda P. Ormes, 63, of Maysville, died Saturday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. She was an employee of Crounse Barge Lines, Maysville, and the Mason County Museum, Maysville. She was a member of St. Patrick Church, Maysville.
Survivors include daughters, Kim Rigdon of Maysville and Stephanie Fryman of Ewing; sons, Greg Ormes and Jeff Ormes, both of Maysville; a brother, Tim Power; and eight grandchildren.

Ella Lloyd Riley, 85, of Carrollton, died Monday at King's Daughter Hospital, Madison, Ind.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Carrollton. Her husband, William Riley, died in 1987.

Ernest W. Sluder, 88, of Florence, died at 4:14 p.m. Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. He was a maintenance man for Rutz Meat Company.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Sluder; a son, Ernest Sluder Jr. of Florence; daughters, Charlene Lannigan of Edgewood, Maxine Wheeldon of Clearwater, Fla., and Alma Jean Trumble and Ruth Ann Baratt, both of Florence; a brother, Terrell Sluder of Cincinnati; a sister, Eunice Taylor of Indianapolis; 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

William M. Weathers Sr., 92, of Lakeside Park, died Monday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. He was a retired field representative for the Kentucky Department of Revenue and a Navy Seabees veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Weathers; a son, William M. Weathers Jr. of Lakeside Park; and two grandchildren.
