Charles Hoffman, deputy sheriff and Turfway usher
Whether as a Kenton County deputy sheriff or as an usher at Turfway Park Race Course, Charles H. Hoffman had a sunny disposition that made other people glow.
Kenton County Circuit Clerk Mary Ann Woltenberg said she met Mr. Hoffman about 40 years ago, when she first joined the clerk's office.
Mr. Hoffman, a deputy sheriff who worked in the courtrooms, was quick to share information as well as a joke, Mrs. Woltenberg said.
"Charlie never met a stranger, " Mrs. Woltenberg said. "He was a giving person and always wanted to help people. He was my best friend and more like family to me."

For many years, Mr. Hoffman greeted ticket holders at Turfway Park in Florence. Again, his easygoing nature served him well in a job that dealt with the public, Mrs. Woltenberg said.
"He loved the courthouse and he loved the race track. He treated everyone with respect. The attorneys loved him and the judges loved him. It is definitely a loss for us, " Mrs. Woltenberg said.
Mr. Hoffman was a Covington native. A sister, Virginia Hoffman of Park Hills, said her brother was a good family man.
"He was outgoing and always wanted to do for other people, " Miss Hoffman said. 'He loved children."
