Paul England, loved children
Paul England loved children as much as anything in life. But his family said he never had his own because he realized he would probably die young due to a lifelong heart condition. Still, Mr. England was very much a father figure to the many youngsters in his life.
"Children were just drawn to him, " said Mr. England's sister, Beverly Fugazzi. "My boys love race cars, and he did that with them. His girlfriend's children played in a band, and he always attended their concerts. He went to my granddaughter's ballet recital. He was such a neat person. But he knew he didn't have long to live."
Paul James England, 48, of Independence, died Saturday at his home.
Mr. England had retired from his job as a plumber and construction worker.
Ms. Fugazzi said her brother's disabling heart condition prevented him from continuing to work, although he had wished to do so.
Mr. England had been on a list for a heart transplant for several years, according to his sister.
A donor heart was never available for Mr. England.
She said he had some hope several years ago when he was given a medication that increased the oxygen supply to his heart.
However, she said he was not able to afford the prescription drug and no longer took it.
"He knew he didn't have long, " said Ms. Fugazzi. "He had even gotten the dimensions and was going to build his own coffin."
