Cornelius Fry, volunteer for Catholic organizations
Cornelius Neil Fry was a quiet man who believed in helping his community.
Mr. Fry, a Northern Kentucky native, volunteered for many Catholic organizations while working full-time to take care of his family.
"He believed in helping people. He would do without things to make sure we had things, " said a son, Mark Fry of Crescent Springs.
"He loved kids, and he worked real hard. He would seldom miss a day."
Mr. Fry, 89, of Fort Wright, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
He was retired from Tribar Orthopedic Company in Cincinnati and a member of the Legion of Honor with the Catholic Order of Foresters in Covington. He was also a member of St. Francis Court No. 962 in Dayton, the Bishop's Choir at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Catholic Theatre Guild in Covington, the Mother of God Choir Club in Covington and the May Festival Chorus in Cincinnati.
Mr. Fry was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Leanne Fry, preceded him in death.
Mr. Fry enjoyed being with his grandchildren and listening to operas, his son said.
Other survivors include sons, Neil Fry of Crestview Hills and Larry Fry of Lexington; daughters, Mary Jo Hafendorfer of Elizabethtown, Connie Fry of Erlanger and Jennifer Topmiller of Florence; brother, Raymond Fry of Mount Washington, Ohio; sister, Mildred Fry of Highland Heights; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the services Saturday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Clara Bachmeyer, 92, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker and a member of Highland United Methodist Church, Fort Thomas and the United Methodist Women's Society Circle No. 8.
Survivors include her son, Dr. Richard Bachmeyer of Florence; daughter, Susan Wilmer of Southgate; sister, Virginia Thomas of Atlanta; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Leon Joseph Bronesky, 74, of Pompano Beach, Fla., died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired colonel in the Army.
Survivors include his daughter, Carrie Schuler of Edgewood; son, Thomas Bronesky of France; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 4 p.m. Friday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph's Indian School, North Main Street, Chamberlain, S.D. 57326.

Richard Allen Brown, 65, of Florence, died at 6:01 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired car salesman at Robke Ford, Latonia, and an Air Force veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Lovell Brown of Florence; son, Rod Brown of Ansbach, Germany; stepsons, John Byrns and Mack Byrns, both of Austin, Texas; stepdaughters, Linda Hudson and Rita Whitley, both of Austin; mother, Margaret Elliott of Florence; and 12 grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Donald Combs, 68, of Alexandria, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired assistant director of the Newport Filtration Plant.
Survivors include his wife, Trina Combs of Alexandria; daughters, Bonnie Silippley of Philadelphia, Pamela Reis of Cold Spring and Robin Geyer, Donna Reckner, Patty Ann Combs and Diana McGill, all of Cincinnati; sons, Don Combs of Cincinnati and Eric Combs of Alexandria; mother, Esther McFeena of Milford, Ohio; sisters, Patty Wagner of Cincinnati and Wanda Lack of Cornelia, Ga.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Betty Darnell, 80, of Highland Heights and formerly of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at Lakeside Nursing Home, Highland Heights.
She was a homemaker and a member of Elks Lodge No. 273, Newport, and the Southgate Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Darnell of Fort Thomas; son, John Darnell of Hollywood, Fla.; brother, Jim Schafstahl of Hudson, Fla.; two grandchildren and a great- grandson.
There will be no services. Her body has been donated to the University of Cincinnati Department of Anatomy.

Louise Sayers Gibson, 85, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at Highland Crossing, Fort Wright. She was a homemaker and a member of Asbury Methodist Church of Highland Heights.
Survivors include a son, Michael Sayers of Alexandria; a sister, Dorothy Reese of Charleston, W.Va.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mildred E. Haas, 83, of Carrollton, died Wednesday at Vencor Hospital, Louisville. She was retired from Meyers Manufacturing, Madison, Ind. Her husband, Ralph P. Haas, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Ann Persall of Carrollton; sisters, Margaret Bowling and Beulah Frankrone, both of Louisville; brother, James P. Voris of Madison; one grandchild and four great-grandchildren.

Elwood R. Haubner, 69, of Covington, died at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a retired master sergeant in the Army during the Korean and Vietnam wars and member of VFW Post No. 6095, Latonia.
Survivors include his son, John Slaughter of Clarksville, Tenn.; daughter, Clarice R. Fruin of Clarksville; sisters, Jean Maness, Patty Gates and Myra Ross, all of Covington; and two grandchildren.

Robert H. Heck Sr., 73, of Melbourne, died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was an equipment operator and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Heck of Melbourne; sons, Clem Doyle of Dayton, Lee Doyle of Petersburg and Robert Heck of Melbourne; daughter, Karen Benner of Pittsburgh, Kans.; brothers, Arthur Heck and Richard Heck, both of Melbourne; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Wilmer "Chuck" Howard, 87, of Berry, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Riverview Baptist Church, Berry. His wife, Alean Howard, died in 1998. He also was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Howard, and a grandson, Ricky Fryman.
Survivors include his daughter, Joyce Fryman of Berry; sons, Glenn Howard of Berry and Gary Lee Howard of Falmouth; sisters, Wanda Mattox, Evelyn Mattox and Sarah Jones, all of Cynthiana; brother, Claude Howard of Cynthiana; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dorothy L. Hurd, 90, of Covington, died at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.
She was a retired executive secretary at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Her husband, Howard Hurd, died in 1991.
Survivors include her sons, Russell Hurd of Gainesville and Gordon Hurd of Karlsruhe, Germany; daughter, Linda Carter of Covington; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Cincinnati Cremation Co. There will be no visitation.

Harold O. "Zip" King, 93, of Fort Thomas and formerly of Newport, died Dec. 10 at the Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home.
He was a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and a member of the Masonic Lodge, Newport, and the Newport Youth Canteen. His wife, Estelle King, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his daughter, Shirley Hundemer of Cincinnati; son, Jerome W. King of Naples, Fla.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ethel V. Kromer, 85, of Bromley, died Tuesday at Woodspoint Care Center, Florence. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Benjamin Kromer, died in 1984.

William J. Lee, 74, of Covington, died Monday at his home. He was a retired laborer and an Army veteran of World War II.

John H. Middendorf, 61, of Park Hills, died Tuesday at his home. He was the beverage manager at Fort Mitchell Country Club and a member of Mother of God Church, Covington, Holy Cross Alumni Association, Latonia.
Survivors include his sons, Scott A. Middendorf of Park Hills and Michael J. Middendorf of Villa Hills; daughter, Kimberly S. Ferguson of Covington; brother, Carl Middendorf of Cincinnati; sister, Dorothy Long of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.
