Ernest Clifford, farmer, school board chairman
Ernest L. Clifford was a man of many talents and concerns.
He spent eight years in the 1970s as a chairman and member of the Harrison County Board of Education. He was a farmer who could take care of animals almost as well as a veterinarian. He was a church deacon and a director of the Pendleton County Beef Cattle Association.
"He was willing to help everyone out, his friends and his neighbors, " said Mr. Clifford's wife of 41 years, Joyce Crupper Clifford.
"He was kind of soft-spoken. He didn't say a lot, but he had a lot of wisdom about him. He had a love of the land, the farm and the conservation of soil. He was a wonderful man."
Mr. Clifford, 67, of Sunrise in Harrison County, died Thursday at his home.
He was a retired tobacco buyer and a member of Richland Baptist Church. He was a Sunday school superintendent of the church, and a former director of the United Kentucky Bank of Pendleton County.
Mr. Clifford, a native of Harrison County, was a former director of the American Gelbvieh Association, a lifetime member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association and treasurer of the Harrison County High School Alumni Association.
He also served as the vice chairman of the Harrison County Fair Board, Harrison County Farm Bureau, Harrison County 4-H Council and FarmHouse Fraternity.
Mrs. Clifford, a retired educator, said her husband cared deeply about children.
"He loved his neighbors and was an unselfish person, " Mrs. Clifford said.
Besides his wife, Mr. Clifford is also survived by his sons, Emmett Daniel Clifford and Benjamin Lyle Clifford, both of Harrison County; brothers, Sherrill G. Clifford and Charles Rogan Clifford, both of Harrison County; a sister, Gaye C. Marsh of Cynthiana; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunrise Cemetery. Florence L. Richard Ailles, 85, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired homemaker. Her husband, William C. Ailles, died in 1980.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia J. Thoman of Newport; sons, William D. Ailles of Texas and Craig R. Ailles of Alabama; sisters, Marian Richard of Dayton and Dorothy Rodgers of Newport; a brother, Joseph Richard of Alexandria; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen-Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Wilder. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.
Zuma Crase Dyer, 81, of Verona, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Verona's First Full Gospel Church of God. Her husband, Golden Dyer, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons, Ray Dyer and Paul Dyer, both of Verona, and Talmadge Dyer of Delhi, Ohio; daughters, Freida Cole of Verona and Sheila Edwards of Dry Ridge; a sister, Louise Williams of Verona; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.
Carl L. Herbst, 82, of Cincinnati, formerly of Campbell County, died Thursday at Hospice of Cincinnati. He was a former employee of Campbell County Schools and a dock worker with Consolidated Trucking Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva Herbst; and a sister, Arlene Vogt Wagner of Alexandria.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
David Michael "JoeLou" Ludewig, 42, of Taylor Mill, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a marine inspection manager with Caleb-Brett Co. in Covington, a member of Taylor Mill Church of Christ, and a youth baseball coach and Cub Scout leader in Taylor Mill.
Survivors include his wife, Sondra Bell Ludewig of Taylor Mill; sons, David Michael Ludewig Jr., Mark William Ludewig and Merik Lane Ludewig, all of Taylor Mill; his parents, Howard and Nancy Yoders Ludewig of Mingo Junction, Ohio; a brother, Howard Ludewig of Groveland, Ill.; and a sister, Pam Clark of Piqua, Ohio.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Presbyterian Church, Mingo Junction. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hoff-Shorac Funeral Home, Mingo Junction, and from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Mingo Junction.
Mary Elizabeth Perry, 75, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired assistant cashier with Grant County Deposit Bank in Williamstown and a member of Order of the Eastern Star in Jonesville, and Dry Ridge Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Perry of Dry Ridge; a son, Hershel Perry of Williamstown; a sister, Pink Peters of Maryland; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Violet Ralen, 87, of Highland Heights, died Thursday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights.

Lenora Poe Stewart, 90, of Sparta, died Tuesday at Owenton Manor. She was a retired teacher and homemaker, and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Poplar Grove Baptist Church. Her husband, Austin Stewart, died in 1992.
Survivors include a son, Franklin Donald Stewart of Long Ridge; a daughter, Mary Ellen Skirvin of Sparta; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Bernice Elizabeth Switzer, 69, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a clerk with Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence and a member of Belleview Baptist Church. Her husband, R. C. Webster, died in 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Baum of Sparta; a son, William Switzer of Union; a sister, Ruth Morris of Cincinnati; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Michael Lloyd Vehige, son of Brandon M. Vehige and Sherenee I. Rimer, both of Independence, was stillborn at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Other survivors include grandparents, Robert and Alesha Rimer of Taylor Mill and John and Pam Vehige of Independence; and great-grandparents, William and Thelma Loman of Taylor Mill, Rosemary Rimer of Taylor Mill, Marie Crouch of Covington and Loretta Vehige of St. Charles, Mo.

Elva Wilson, 87, of Taylor Mill, died at 8:46 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill. She was a member of the church Fun Club and St. Stephen Card Clubs, Newport. Her husband, Philip J. Wilson, died in 1976. Daughters, Maureen Wilson and Nancy Wilson, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Tom Wilson and David Wilson, both of Covington, Ray Wilson of Taylor Mill, Mike Wilson of Villa Hills and Jim Wilson of Latonia; daughters, Rosemary Santel of Fairfield, Ohio, and Martha Mason of Mount Carmel, Ohio; brothers, Matt Kling and Bill Kling, both of Newport, and Art Kling of Wilder; a sister, Betty Koehler of Newport; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Church, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony School, 485 Grand Ave., Taylor Mill, Ky. 41015. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Alice Mussman Ziegenhardt, 94, of Latonia, died Monday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was a homemaker and a member of Emera Chapter No. 382 Order of the Eastern Star. She was also an avid oil painter. Her husband, Howard Ziegenhardt, died in 1972.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Mrs. Ziegenhardt bequeathed her body to the University of Kentucky. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
