Orville Powell, no stranger to hard work

The drive from Irvine to Newport takes about an hour and a half these days - a breeze compared to how long it took Orville Powell to pedal his bike from his hometown in central Kentucky to Northern Kentucky in the late 1930s.

Mr. Powell and his brothers would make the trek up U.S. 27 every weekend to find odd jobs so they could bring money back to their farming town. They picked up work at companies such as Newport Steel or with homeowners who needed yard work done.

"If anybody needed help doing things, they would do it, " said Mr. Powell's oldest son, Ron Powell of Alexandria.

"That's what those people did back in those days, and he was just one of them."

Mr. Powell of Taylor Mill died Thursday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. He was 79.

Mr. Powell met his future wife, Eula, in Northern Kentucky. Her father was a preacher, and she had moved to Kentucky with her family from Ohio.

The two were married in 1946, a year after Mr. Powell returned with a Purple Heart from Germany, where he had been fighting in the Army in World War II.

After the war, Mr. Powell worked several different jobs before finding a position delivering appliances for Pharo Trucking Co. in Cincinnati.

He retired after 15 years with the company.

Mr. Powell was a fan of music and dancing, his son said.

"He was probably one of the best jitterbuggers I ever saw in my life, " Ron Powell said.

"I could never outdo him in dancing."

Mr. Powell kept dancing until he was about 73 and, in his later years, spent much time taping and listening to gospel music.

"He spent many hours down in his basement listening to music and taping it, " Ron Powell said. "It was his hobby."

Mr. Powell was a member of Teamsters Local No. 100.
