John Richard Westwood, engineer, senator's father
John Richard Westwood raised his children to love God and country, and touched lives wherever he went.
"He lived a very good life. He made a very big impact on people, " said his son, Sen. Jack Westwood of Erlanger.
He was a man of steadfast faith, a charter member of the Lakeside Christian Church. He joined the congregation when it was a fledgling group of about 40 to 50 people that met in the Crescent Springs Elementary School.
He served for many years as an elder at the church, now a large congregation in Lakeside Park, and this year was named elder emeritus of the body.
"I think people looked to him as a leader, " Jack Westwood said.
Mr. Westwood, 81, of Elsmere, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired design engineer with Cincinnati Electronics, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
He loved to have fun and had a knack making plays on words or using puns to liven up conversation or make others laugh. He also was a good artist. All of his children have paintings he created.
He was active in the Republican Party and took pride in the fact that his son Jack was elected state senator four years ago.
His children have fond childhood memories. "We never had air conditioning, and there were five kids, Mom and Dad in a two-bedroom house, " recalled Jack Westwood. "I don't know how they did it, really. Usually in the evenings in the summer, our form of recreation would be to get into the car and just get out and drive. We would just have a real good time driving and seeing nature."
Jack Westwood's brother Wayne recalls a trip with his dad to a Kaiamichi Clinic, a Christian camp in Oklahoma. Wayne Westwood, of Frankfort, recalls the experience as "a real bonding time."
In addition to sons Jack and Wayne, Mr. Westwood's survivors include his wife, Virginia Gardner Westwood; son Greg Westwood of Taylor Mill; daughters, Bonnie Caseldine of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Joyce Westwood of Cincinnati; a half-brother, Paul Rairden of Hialeah, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
