Ralph Chalk, Bellevue printer
Ralph "Chalkie" William Chalk was the very first employee the Wendling family ever hired to work at its Newport printing company in 1952.
"He worked nights and weekends and even brought work home, " recalls his son Keith Chalk.
"My mom even has a funny story about being in labor with me, and she called him to tell him.
"His response was, 'Do I have time to clean the press?"'
Mr. Chalk, 66, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington, after a brief illness.
Mr. Chalk, of Bellevue, retired in 1995 as a printer at Wendling Printing.
His son said he instilled a strong work ethic in all of his children.
"Now, sitting back at the age of 33, I look back and see that it taught me a lot, " said Keith Chalk.
"And I'll tell you there are four employers around here now that are grateful that's what dad taught us."
Mr. Chalk was an Army veteran who served in Germany during the Korean War era.
He was a member of Bellevue Vets.
He was also a member of St. Anthony Church, Bellevue, St. Catherine of Siena Seniors Club and St. Thomas 55 Club.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Georgie Thier Chalk; sons, Karl Chalk of Independence, Keith Chalk of Fort Thomas and Kevin Chalk of Alexandria; a daughter, Karen Grow of Cincinnati; a brother, Joseph Chalk of Hebron; a sister, Sister Colletta Chalk, S.F.P., of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with Bellevue Vets services at 7:45 p.m.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Gregory Bowling, 43, of Dry Ridge, died at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Creighton Eugene Keene, 69, of Madison, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Tuesday in Valdosta, Ga.
He was a diesel mechanic and an Army veteran.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus, the Foresters and St. Vincent DePaul Church, Madison, Fla.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Keene; a son, Douglas Eugene Keene of Madison; and brothers, Charles Keene of Independence, Ralph Keene of Charleston, S.C., Gerald Keene of Alexandria, Lloyd Keene of Villa Hills and Thomas Keene of Covington.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent DePaul Church, Madison, Fla.

Clara B. Baker McEntire, 54, of Florence, died Wednesday at her home.
Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.
James Michael "Jamie" Roberts, 22, of Corinth, died Tuesday at Salem Woods Nursing Home, Cincinnati.
He was a member of Cornerstone of Faith Church, Dry Ridge.
Survivors include his mother, Shirley Gerth of Corinth; grandparents, Allen Roberts of Owenton and Dorothy Smith of St. Cloud, Fla.; and great-grandmother, Sarah Roberts of Glencoe.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Cornerstone of Faith Church.
Burial will be in Poplar Grove Cemetery. Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth, is handling arrangements.
Wesley Stigall, 85, of Erlanger, died at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Norma Rose Warman, 86, of Covington, died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
She was a group leader with Gibson Greeting Card Co.
Survivors include daughters, Joan Pope of Penrose, Colo., Barbara Jean Knapke of Indianapolis and Jeri Warman of Covington; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:05 p.m. Friday at Mother of God Church, Covington.
Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.
Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
