Lou Roberto, Pasquale's owner
Lou Roberto was one of those people everybody knew - someone who forever touched others with his humor and generosity.
"Everyone had a 'Lou story, ' " said his daughter LuAnn Roberto. "He was one of those people who was pretty much larger than life."
People never knew what hilarious thought or tidbit might spill from Mr. Roberto's lips next.
"He was one of those people who didn't have an editing system, " his daughter recalled, laughing.
Mr. Roberto, 72, of Covedale, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital.
He owned and operated the Pasquale's Pizza on Monmouth Street in Newport for 43 years after opening the business with his sons Tony and Vince in the early 1950s.
He and his cousins started the local Pasquale's chain in another store in Cincinnati. Several franchise outlets opened later.
"He was the original pizza man, " said his son Vince Roberto. 'If you grew up in Newport, you were raised on Pasquale's Pizza."
The store was the most important thing in his life, his children said.
But people close to Mr. Roberto knew he also loved to gamble.
"To really know Lou, you had to be at the crap table with him, " said his daughter Gina Roberto. "It was magic."
Mr. Roberto owned several racehorses and was active in the racing community.
In 1978, he won a second prize worth $5, 000 in the Ohio Lottery. First prize in those days was about $400, 000.
Mr. Roberto was a Navy veteran. He was active in his parish, St. Antonio Chapel, donating time, expertise and money to organizing annual Monte Carlos and spaghetti dinners.
