'Carmie' Meyers, cabinet maker
Charles J. "Carmie" Meyers Jr. of Fort Mitchell worked just about every day of his adult life.
At 78, he was still building customized cabinets from his shop, Meyers Wood Products Co. in Covington.
"A job is waiting to be delivered at his workshop right now, " said his daughter, Debbie J. Kenning of Villa Hills. "He was never sick. He was very active. He always worked. Nothing ever kept him down."
Mr. Meyers died at 10:35 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
The cabinet maker suffered a heart attack during his daily routine of leaving work at 10 a.m. to get coffee.
Mr. Meyers was a former employee of Red Top Brewing Co. in Cincinnati, where he was a pay master. He also was a cabinet maker with Ohio Scroll Co., Covington and Cincinnati.
He was a member of BOE of Elks Lodge No. 314 and a 30-year member of the Kenton County Golf Course Sunday couples league, where he golfed with his wife, Loretta Simon Meyers.
Mr. Meyers adored his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren. He always had candy in his pocket and gave it out to anyone he would meet.
Mr. Meyers also had a good sense of humor.
"He loved to tease and give pinches on the cheek, " Mrs. Kenning said. "He was fun."
In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by another daughter, Sue C. Schwab of Villa Hills; brothers, Thomas Richard Meyers of Dayton, Ohio, and Paul R. Meyers of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Jane Meyers Ruttle of Fort Mitchell; and four grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 tonight at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Edith Wren Barton, 76, of Walton, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a retired bookkeeper with Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Verona. Her husband, Luther Barton, died in 1993.
Survivors include a son, Luther Barton Jr. of Dry Ridge; daughters, Peggy Thornton of Walton and Myrna Floyd of Dry Ridge; brothers, Harold Wren of Erlanger and James Wren of Warsaw; a sister, Viola O'Donnell of Walton; five grandchildren and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Napoleon.

Cindy Crispen, 44, of Louisville, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Monday at Baptist Hospital East, Louisville.
She was a former medical technician with the University of Kentucky, a member of the Jefferson County Medical Society Alliance and a fundraiser for ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease research.
She was also a member of the Our Lord Church, Goshen.
Survivors include her husband, Mel Crispen; a son, Robert Crispen, at home; a daughter, Claire Crispen, at home; her mother, Marie Sattler Shaw; and a sister, Cathleen Shaw Bree.
Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Albert the Great Church, Louisville. A reception will follow in the church hall.

Jane Fryer, 95, of Florence, died Thursday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Robert N. Fryer of Lawrence burg; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were this morning at Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Irene Lyons Harp, 92, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at Grand Haven Nursing Home in Cynthiana.
She was a homemaker and a member of Central Christian Church, Cynthiana. Her husband, Hal Harp, and a daughter, Haleta Harp, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Randall Harp of Williamstown; daughters, Betty Dailey and Rosalie Spegal, both of Lexington; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Pearl Mae Hill, 93, of Warsaw, died Thursday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of Warsaw Baptist Church. Her husband, Arthur Gilbert Hill, died in 1967.
Survivors include a daughter, Juanita Hill of Warsaw; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be Warsaw Cemetery.

Fred Joos III, 57, of Grants Lick, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a mechanic with Disabled American Veterans in Cold Spring, a member of Charles R. Gailey VFW Post No. 7340 in Cincinnati and a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Penny Jo Joos; sons, Jeff Joos, Scott Joos and Marc Joos, all of Cincinnati; daughters, Susan Marie Joos and Laura Denise Joos, both of Alexandria, and Tracy Reibler of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Dortha Fryman Mayfield, 83, of White Springs, Fla., formerly of Dayton, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lake City, Fla., Medical Center.
She was a homemaker and a member of Gospel Assembly Church. Her husband, Taylor Mayfield, died in 1995.
Survivors include daughters, Barbara Leah Hickman of Ocoee, Fla., and Dianne Harder of White Springs, Fla.; a sister, Erma J. Sandlin of Kissimmee, Fla.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Charles M. McComas, 69, of Williamstown, died Thursday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Lexington.
He was a retired carpenter, a member of Williamstown American Legion Post No. 137 and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Paula Southerland McCree, 53, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. She was a beautician and a member of Headquarters United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her hus band, John Paul McCree; her father and stepmother, Friend Hardin Southerland and Janice Southerland of Bourbon County; a daughter, Holly Rose of West Union W.Va.; brothers, Friend Hardin Southerland Jr. of Oneida, Tenn., Timothy Haskins and Gregory Haskins, both of Bourbon County, Thomas Haskins of Bracken County and Donald Haskins of Fayette County; a sister, Fannie Rose Marie Southerland of Bourbon County; and one grandson.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens, Harrison County.
Gunnar Swede Rachford, son of Brett and Laura Rachford of Covington, died shortly after birth Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Other survivors include a brother, Sean Rachford, at home; grandparents, Ron and Judy Shuley of Southgate and Tom and Janice Rachford of Alexandria; and great-grandmothers, Geraldine Allen of Erlanger and Beverly Wilson of Highland Heights.

Howard F. Ranson, 82, of Alexandria, died at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday at his home.
He was a railroad clerk with CSX and a store manager with D. D. Fitzgerald Co., Silver Grove. He also was a member of CSX Seniors and John R. Little VFW Post No. 3186 in Southgate. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Betty M. Ranson; sons, John H. Ranson of Fort Thomas and Thomas C. Ranson of Cold Spring; daughters, Mary Meyer of Dallas, Texas, Margaret Mader of Alexandria, Catherine Gregory and Barbara Nelsen, both of Wilder, and Janet Thompson of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Kenneth Ranson and Samuel Ranson, both of Dillwyn, Va.; a sister, Elizabeth Burroughs of Colton Point, Md.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Alexandria Funeral Home. VFW service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Mausoleum, Fort Thomas.

Emma Thompson, 78, of Palm Harbor, Fla., formerly of Ludlow, died Wednesday in Palm Harbor.
She was a retired press operator supervisor with Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. Her husband, William Thompson; a son, Herman Reid; and a daughter, Helen Davis, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Bill Walton, 83, of Covington, died at 3:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was a retired mechanic with Union Light, Heat & Power. A former deacon and trustee of Latonia Baptist Church, he also was a founding member of the Latonia Youth Club, a farmer and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Nora Scalf Walton; a son, Herb Walton of Fort Wright; a daughter, Beth Walton Trapp of Latonia; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Kathryn Worley, 88, of Corbin, died Tuesday at Corbin Nursing Home. Her husband, Jim Worley, preceded her in death.
