Dr. Melvin Weber, physician
For more than 30 years, Dr. Melvin J. Weber was a family physician in Ludlow.
He delivered hundreds of babies and had thousands of patients but still managed to always be there for his children, said a son, former Kentucky Post Sports Editor Daniel Weber of Tustin Ranch, Calif.
"He was always there. Even though he was a solo practitioner and often worked seven days a week, he was always there for us, " Dan Weber said.
"He made time for everybody's big game or event. That's what was so special about him."
Dr. Weber, 89, of Fort Wright, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
Dr. Weber grew up in Ludlow and Bromley and retained his small-town hospitality during his practice, which served patients from all over Northern Kentucky.
He was a flight surgeon from 1942-45 during World War II.
After the war, Dr. Weber concentrated on treating his patients and raising his family. Another son, Robert Weber of Lakeside Park, followed in his footsteps and also became a family physician.
Dan Weber said his father helped heal people with kind words and patience.
"He had the ability to listen to people to get their stories, " Dan Weber said.
"He really didn't speak about himself. But he knew how to listen to other people. He was a really special guy."
Dr. Weber closed his family practice in 1972. He taught at the University of Cincinnati and performed geriatric care in his later years.
He was a member of St. Agnes Parish in Fort Wright; a 60-year member of the Knights of Columbus Kehoe Council; a past member of the Sierra Club; a past president of the St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Staff; a former board member of St. Charles Care Center; a charter member of the American Academy of Family Practice; and was a past member of the Lions Club.
