Robert Ryan Sr., postman
For some 35 years, Robert Emmet Ryan Sr. of Covington delivered mail in Kenton County cities like Covington, Fort Mitchell and Crescent Springs.
"He used to meet a lot of different people, " said Virginia Lucy Ryan, his wife of 60 years. "He was really nice to them and I think people liked him.
"All the people I met who knew him said he was always joking with them."
Mr. Ryan, 90, died Wednesday at Grant Manor Health Care Center in Williamstown.
Mr. Ryan was born and reared in Covington, where he played football for Holmes High School.
He also liked to play baseball and manage baseball teams. He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
Mr. Ryan was an Army veteran of World War II.
He took a job as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service after working on a railroad.
He was active in many organizations and served as past president of both the Taylor Mill Lions Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He also was a member of St. Patrick Church in Taylor Mill, St. Patrick Irish Rovers, Knights of Columbus Father Bealer Council 3908, Catholic War Veterans, Covington Eagles and the American Legion Post 203 in Latonia.
Other survivors include his sons, Robert E. Ryan Jr. and Jon P. Ryan, both of Covington, and Michael A. Ryan of Edgewood; daughters, Barbara A. Utter of Frankfort, Mary J. Truell of Meredith, N.H. and Karen Sue King of Covington; a sister, Margaret Babey of Cincinnati; 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Church in Taylor Mill.
Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home in Latonia.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Taylor Mill.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Travis Alig, 18, of Union, died Thursday. He was a senior at Ryle High School, where he was a standout football and baseball player.
Survivors include his parents, Jeff and Lori Alig both of Union; a brother, Josh Alig of Unio n; a sister, Shanna Alig, also of Union; paternal grandparents, Edward and Loraine Alig, both of Florence; ma ternal grandparents, Robert Green of Covington and Donna Green of Williamstown; maternal great-grandparent, Emmett Whaley of Williamstown; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday at Ryle High School Gymnasium, Union. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Ryle High School gymnasium. Graveside services begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Esther Elliott Benson, 93, of Union, died Thursday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital. She was a retired elementary school teacher. She was a member of Wilmington Baptist Church in Kenton County and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.
Her husband, Willard V. Benson, and daughter, Barbara Ruth Benson Stewart, preceded her in de ath.
Survivors include a son, Billy K. Benson of Union; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation w ill be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Alvin L. Cable, 84, of Burlington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospital South in Edgewood.
He was a retired carpenter for Bamveck & Vest Co. in Cincinnati. He was a member of the Burlington Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge in Burlington and the Scottish Rite in Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Cable of Burlington; daughter, Norma Jean Pope of Florence; a brother Charles Cable of Batavia, Ohio; a grandson and several nieces and nephews.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Burlington Baptist Church, 3031 Washington St., Burlington, Ky. 41005.
Sherri Deraye Cole, 33, of Bromley, died Tuesday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.
Survivors include her fiancee, Lawrence Jones of Edgewood; her mother, Kathryn Cole Wolfe of Bromley; her father, Larry Cole of Villa Hills; a son, Aaron Williams of Bromley; daughters, Kellie Jane Cole and Jessica Kathryn Cole both of Bromley; brothers, Travis Cole of Villa Hills and Ly-Roi Wolfe of Bedford, Texas; a grandfather, William Brewer of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a grandmother, Connie Collette of Crescent Springs.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mike L. Elkins, 86, of Newport, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired coal miner. He was an army veteran of World War II. His wife, Lucille Elkins, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, James L. Elkins of Cincinnati; daughters, Shelby Storms and Debbie Ramsey, both of Newport, Margaret Wright of Portland, Tenn., and Mary Daniel of Hollywood, Fla.; brothers, James E. Elkins of California and Robert Elkins of Springdale, Va.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Mary Kindle, 66, of Hebron, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a retired florist at Roses and More Florist, Florence. She was a member of Sand Run Baptist Church, Hebron.
Survivors include a daughter, Delores Kenton of Hebron; sisters, Violet McCane and Delores Webb, both of Independence; Betty Fields of Petersburg and Dorothy Herrington of Hebron; brothers, Perry Kindle of Erlanger and Allan Kindle of Hebron; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

George Kinstler, 75, of Alexandria, died Wednesday at his residence. He was a retired platform man for Railway Express in Cincinnati. He was a greeter for Wal-Mart in Alexandria. He was past Grand Knight for Father De Jaco Council K of C No. 5220, also Bishop Flaget Assembly fourth degree and past president of St. Mary seniors.
Survivors include his wife, Dottie Kinstler of Alexandria; a son, Michael Kinstler of Burlington; daughters Mary Beth Kinstler of Alexandria and Norma Gaines of Covington; a brother, Edward Kinstler of Covington; and three grandchildren.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery in Alexandria. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075.
Lloyd Carter Lawrence, 65, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at Harrison County Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana.
Survivors include his mother, Florence Beam Carter of Covington; brothers, Jack Lawrence of Lexington, Seth Thomas 'Peanut' Carter of Sparta, and Marshall Carter of Vevay, Ind.; sisters, Katie Hoffman of Latonia, Kathy St. John of New Port Richey, Fla., Sue Ruley of Florence; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will begin at 2 p.m. today at the Owenton I.O.O.F Cemetery, Owenton. There is no visitation scheduled.
Sebastion W. Luther, son of James Luther and Theresa McNutt both of Covington, died at birth Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Other survivors include a brother, Michael Luther of Covington; a sister, Jasmine Luther of Covington; maternal grandparents, Wayne and Charlotte McNutt of Batesville, Ind., and Deborah Trimble of Covington; paternal grandparents, Jerry Louis Engles and Mary Elaine Henry both of Newport.
Services and visitation are at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Baltimore Pike Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Glenn E. Reed, 92, of Ft. Thomas, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice Unit in Covington. He was a retired mailer for the Cincinnati Enquirer and Cincinnati Post. He was a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Laurene Reed of Ft. Thomas; daughters, Donna Keith of Cincinnati and Kimberley Shephard of Covington; son, James E. Wadlinger of Cincinnati; and a sister, Violet Whitman of Highland Heights.
Graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate. Radel Funeral Home, Newport is in charge of arrangements.
Naomi Vastine, 80, of Latonia, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth South Medical Center, Edgewood. She was a member of Latonia Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, William Vastine of Latonia; son, Joseph Gerber of San Fransisco, Calif; a stepson, Wayne Vastine of Covington; daughters, Annette Koons and Jean Spade, both of Indiana, and Billie Sue Cain of California; a stepdaughter, Phyllis Vastine of Covington; 15 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at Don Catchen & Son Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill.
