Thelma Thaxton, grocer in Abagail
Thelma Walton Thaxton was a quiet woman who spoke loudly with her determination.
She built her own grocery store in Abagail in Robertson County. She sold milk, eggs, bread and other staples and added on to the business and sold gasoline, said a son, Wendell Hall of Covington.
"She had a nice country store. She always had a garden. You know, country people just work hard, " Mr. Hall said.
Mrs. Thaxton, 89, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a former owner of Thaxton's Grocery and was a member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church.
Mrs. Thaxton grew up in Robertson County and enjoyed having her own business, her son said. She owned the store for about 15 years in the 1950s and 1960s before moving to Covington.
"She was soft-spoken and never had an enemy, " Mr. Hall said.
Besides her son, other survivors include her husband, Roy Wayne Thaxton; and sisters, Naomi Snodgrass of Orange Springs, Fla., and Pauline Bailey of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mount Olivet. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Naomi Ruth Wilbers Wahn Cain, 66, of Phoenix, formerly of Latonia and Union, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. She was a retired clerk for Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and a member of Mother of God Church, Covington.
Survivors include sons, David William Wahn of Independence and Theodore Robert Wahn of Covington; daughters, Diane Elizabeth Shotton and Patricia Ann Williams, both of Phoenix, Cheryl Ann Vos of Burlington, Cathy Ann Baer of Florence and Deborah Lynn Prather of Independence; brothers, Lawrence Wilbers and Paul Wilbers, both of Cincinnati; a sister, Mary Ann Albers of Covington; and 17 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Mother of God Church. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45219; or charity of donor's choice. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Albert E. Caldwell, 88, of Independence, died at 2:55 p.m. Tuesday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia. He was a retired car repairman for L&N; Railroad and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Hilltop Church of Christ, Latonia.
Survivors include brothers, George Caldwell of Independence and Ray Edward Caldwell of Danville; and a sister, Dorothy Wetterhan of Independence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Camp Northwood, Falmouth, Ky. 41040.
Wilbur Allen Dunaway, 68, of Newport, died at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday at Jewish Hospital-Kenwood in Cincinnati. He was a stationary boiler engineer for Hamilton County, Ohio, and a Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of Scottish Rite Lodge Council Chapter Consistory Valley of Cincinnati, and Benjamin Franklin Lodge No. 719 F&AM in Hamilton, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Victoria J. Dunaway; sons, Allen Dunaway, Roy Wayne Dunaway and Marcus Dunaway, all of Cincinnati; a stepson, Samuel Reed of Hawaii; a stepdaughter, Vilma Tilett of Butler; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
Lacie Davis Gross, 89, of Vevay, Ind., formerly of Glencoe, died at 9:26 a.m. Wednesday at Swiss Villa Living Center in Vevay. She was a member of the Pleasant Home Baptist Church, Glencoe. Her husband, Riley Gross, died in 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Vergie Davis of Covington; sons, Louis Gross of Florence and Alvin Gross, Fred Gross and Paul Gross, all of Glencoe; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from noon until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Vine Run Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
Jerry Hamilton, 46, of Union, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a farmer.
Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Lane Reed of Texas; brothers, Jeff Hamilton of Verona and George Hamilton of California; sisters, Daisy Justice of Hamilton, Ohio, and Wilma Minnix of Flora, Ind.; half-brothers, Ira Gene Schooler of Germantown, Robert Schooler of Warsaw and Orville Schooler of Williamstown; half-sisters, Sally Hoover of Falmouth and Brenda Hatfield of Crittenden; and stepbrothers and stepsisters.
Services will be at noon Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Big Bone Baptist Cemetery, Union.
Destiny Belle Harmeling, 1 month, daughter of Dustin and Kristy Appel Harmeling of Walton, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
Other survivors include a sister, Courtney Appel of Walton; grandparents, Jim and Ruth Harmeling of Independence, Dale and Lynette Appel of Burlington, and Carole Shirley of Florence; and great-grandmother, Josephine Haynes of Florence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Helen A. Michael, 92, of Fort Wright, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. She was a homemaker, a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow, and a former member of Ludlow Ladies Civic Club. Her husband, Herbert Michael, died in 1996.
Survivors include sons, Lawrence Michael of Fairport, N.Y., Joseph Michael of Dayton, Ohio, Ronald Michael of Cincinnati and Raymond Michael of Edgewood; a daughter, Norma Hanekamp of Mack, Ohio; a sister, Irma Wilkerson of Edgewood; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Margaret Kimelton Nickell, 97, of Richmond, Ind., formerly of Independence, died Wednesday at Golden Rule-Beverly Health Care in Richmond. She was a homemaker and a member of Eggleston United Methodist Church, Fort Mitchell. Her husband, Roy I. Nickell, died in 1975.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Lohmoeller of Richmond; and a son, Roy K. Nickell of Independence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Goshen Christian Church, Piner. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Leonard Gayle Poe, 58, of Maysville, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a former ROTC instructor for Mason County High School, a farmer, and worked for Hilltop Ford, Maysville. He was a retired Army veteran and a member of Lewisburg Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Christel Poe; a daughter, Brenda Drissman of Florence; a son, David Allen Poe of Florence; a brother, Gerald Poe of Mays Lick; and sisters, Bonnie Copering of Sarasota, Fla., and Sharon Coe of Statesville, Ga.

Oliver Stanley Schnitzler Sr., 58, of Newport, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a retired machinist and a member of the Merchant Marines.
Survivors include a son, Oliver Stanley Schnitzler Jr. of Elsmere; a daughter, Debbie Storm of Berea; brothers, Gail J. Schnitzler of Alexandria, James C. Schnitzler of Berea, Earl F. Schnitzler of Council Grove, Kan., Charles R. Schnitzler of Springfield, Ohio, David L. Schnitzler of Covington and Norman R. Schnitzler of Chicago; step-brothers, Joe Schnitzler of Bellevue and Edward Schnitzler of Morning View; sisters, Ruth West of California, Betty Williams of Highland Heights, JoAnne Keeler of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Martha Paynter of Mentor; a step-sister, Mary Moss of Indianapolis; and two granddaughters.

William Ernie Skelton, 60, of Florence, died Monday at Florence Park Care Center. He was a self-employed carpenter.
Survivors include sons, William E. Skelton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., Thomas J. Skelton of Claryville, and Christopher Skelton and Stephen Skelton, both of Newport; daughters, Danielle Skelton of Newport and Jennifer Carr of Florence; his mother, Virginia Skelton of Park Hills; brothers, Robert Skelton of Richwood and Roy Skelton of Covington; five grandchildren; and his fiancee, Shirley Dubay of Walton.

Mildred Tarvin, 91, of California, died at 9:08 p.m. Monday at Woodspoint Care Center in Florence. She was a retired teacher for Dora Cummins School in Newport, and A. J. Jolly Elementary School in California. She was a member of Carthage United Methodist Church.
Survivors include daughters, Pamela Lischkge of Greendale, Ind., and Patricia Dunn of Fort Thomas; a brother, James Chaney of Bella Vista, Ark.; sisters, Kate Ramsey of Somerset, Floy Herndon of Frankfort, Edna Keefe of Oakland, Irene Short of Horse Cave and Pauline Settle of Maineville, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
