Falmouth's Lena Whalen, helped deliver 56 babies
Lena Whalen helped bring a lot of babies into this world.
In fact, if a woman was giving birth, or a child was hurt in Falmouth in the 1930s, '40s and '50s, Mrs. Whalen was there.
"Whenever a family was expecting, they would say, "Go get Lena. She'll help, " recalls her son, Marvin Whalen of Cincinnati. She helped deliver 56 babies, he said.
Her grandmother, Sallie Ann McClanahan, was a midwife and delivered 500 to 600 babies in the area, and it was almost as if helping deliver children was in his mother's blood, Whalen said.
The neighbors also depended on Mrs. Whalen when children got hurt or sick.
"She really didn't have any formal medical training, but she could stand the sight of blood, and she was willing to help, " Whalen said.
She was also available for people when they had deaths in their families, always taking food to the bereaved family members.
