William Zumbiel, inventor
William A. Zumbiel used to sit at his kitchen table inventing things.
Mr. Zumbiel was a refrigeration engineer who invented several items that were patented. One was a valve that prevented the escape of Freon from large refrigeration units. Another was an "air curtain, " a shield of air near doors of buildings such as large retail stores. The curtain kept the weather outside and climate-controlled air inside.
Mr. Zumbiel, 79, of Edgewood, died at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He had a career with the Kroger Co., then sold refrigeration equipment after he retired. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Zumbiel was the consummate family man.
He will be remembered for "his absolute dedication and devotion to his family, " said his daughter, Nancy Goeke, of Edgewood.
Her brother agreed.
"He was the epitome of a dedicated family person, " said Bill Zumbiel of Edgewood.
He was a very gentle, modest man and a peacemaker.
His wife was his best friend. "They had a true companionship, " said Ms. Goeke.
He also had good relationships with business associates. "He had a lot of dignity and was well thought of by the people he worked with, " Bill Zumbiel said.
"He was well respected by everyone who met him, " Ms. Goeke said.
In addition to Mr. Zumbiel and Ms. Goeke, survivors include his wife of 52 years, Ruth C. Wiegel Zumbiel; a son, Jim Zumbiel of San Diego; daughters, Bonnie Cherry of Loveland, Ohio, and Debbie King of Florence; a brother, Jack Zumbiel of Florence; a sister, Eileen Williams of Erlanger; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. John Church, 627 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011; St. Henry District High School, 3755 Scheben Drive, Erlanger, Ky. 41018; or the charity of the donor's choice.
Fenton Bowman Cain, 97, of Morning View, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
Frances Sloop Davenport, 94, of Maysville, died Monday at Maysville Extended Care Center. She was a retired waitress and a member of Olivet United Methodist Church, Maysville. Her husband, Allie Davenport, and a son, Donald Davenport, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Ralph Davenport of Maysville; a brother, Ralph Sloop of Manchester, Ohio; sisters, Margaret Rigdon of Aberdeen, Ohio, and Juanita Bishop of Flemingsburg; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Olivet Cemetery, Maysville.
Evelyn "Robbins" Dwertman, 85, of Fort Wright, died at 12:05 p.m. Friday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. John Congregational Church, Covington. She was a member of the church Ladies Aid and Adult Bible Class, and the Fort Wright Hilltoppers Senior Citizens.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Clem A. Dwertman; sons, David Dwertman of Fort Meyers, Fla., Mark Dwertman of Park Hills and Bernie Dwertman of Cincinnati; daughters, Susan Niles and Teri Timmerman, both of Cincinnati; brothers, John Robbins and Earl Robbins, both of Hot Springs, Ark.; a sister, Rosemary Weber of Fort Thomas; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at St. John Congregational Church, Covington. Mrs. Dwertman bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to St. John Congregation Church, 1235 Highway Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011; or St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Zachary David Freeman, 9, of Verona, died at 8:40 a.m. Monday at Children's Hospital, Cincinnati, after an extend ed illness. He was a third grader at Gallatin County Elementary School.
Survivors include his parents, David L. and Laura Anne Peters Freeman of Verona; a brother, Jacob Freeman of Verona; a sister, Amanda Freeman of Verona; grandparents, Herschell and Nancy Freeman of Verona and Don and Janet Peters of Hamilton, Ohio; and great-grandparents, Arvil Byrd of Rabbit Hash and Willie Peters of Hamilton, Ohio.
Services were at noon today at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Burial was in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Anna May Hueil, 90, of Villa Hills, died Monday at Madonna Manor Nursing Home in Villa Hills. She was a thread maker with Globe Tailoring.
Survivors include a sister, Charlette Brinker of Villa Hills; a niece and five nephews.

Jack John Lee, 82, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington and Newport, died Monday at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a brother, Robert E. Lee of Cincinnati; nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Xavier Church, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Sisters of Divine Providence, 1000 St. Anne Drive, Melbourne, Ky. 41059. Schaefer & Busby Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.
Carl Reams, 73, of Latonia, died Tuesday at his home.
Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
Ray Junior Rogers, 72, of Newport, died Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired self-employed painter.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi Rogers; daughters, Pattie Trimnell and Gina Tabor, both of Newport, Vickie Tabor of Owenton, Brenda Lovelace of Falmouth and Gina Waechter of Bellevue; sons, Terry Rogers of Burlington, Timmy Rogers of Erlanger and Danny Rogers of Newport; a brother, Ralph Rogers of Alexandria; 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Catherine Schomaker, 81, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker, a member of Club 55 at St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas and a volunteer with St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Her husband, Robert F. Schomaker, died in 1991.
Survivors include sons, Richard F. Schomaker of Fort Thomas and Robert J. Schomaker of Lynchburg, Va.; and three grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Bryan Meade Welch, 73, of Worthville, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired buyer with Austin Tobacco Co., and a former member of the Carrollton Jaycees and Carrollton Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Tilley Welch; daughters, Heidi D. Nichols of Tequesta, Fla., and Bethany Anne Krehl of Amarillo, Texas; a son, Richard Scott Walls of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister Frances Patterson of Carrollton; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.
