Virginia 'Bootsie' Root, came from Newport founders
Virginia Bliss "Bootsie" Root, a descendant of the founding families of Newport, died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday at the Highlands of Fort Thomas, where she had lived for a year and a half. She was 86.
Miss Root was a great-granddaughter of Richard Southgate on her father's side and a descendant of Gen. James Taylor on her mother's side.
But it was her modern day family that claimed her heart and her energy.
"She was the oldest girl and like a second mother to us, " said her sister, Bettie Root Rice Hesch of Fort Thomas. 'Her family was her life."
As was the custom in the 1920s, she quit high school to help her mother care for her brothers and sister.
She lived with her parents on Fourth Street in Newport, and worked at Gibson Greeting Cards and later at Hyde Park Clothes.
"She was engaged, but the war came along and things changed, " her sister said. "She never married."
But she maintained a lively family life through her brothers, sister, nieces and nephews. She enjoyed family vacations and she was the one everyone called with family news or travel plans.
In the 1980s, she volunteered at St. Luke Hospital.
She worked in the laundry and her sister-in-law, also named Virginia Root, volunteered in the surgical waiting room.
Miss Root was a regular at the Campbell County senior picnics, and once won the jitterbug contest.
