Ralph Cannoy, quality control officer, passionate fisherman
After 33 years as a quality control officer for the Ashland/Valvoline Oil Co., Ralph M. Cannoy retired seven years ago and spent much of his time doing what he loved best: fishing.
Mr. Cannoy, 70, died Friday at his home of a heart attack.
He had a history of heart problems since a heart attack about 10 years ago.
A native of Winchester, Mr. Cannoy grew up in Frenchburg in Menifee County and served four years in the Air Force, including a stint in Korea during the Korean War.
He left the service with the rank of staff sergeant and then attended Morehead State University, from which he graduated in 1956.
He moved his family from Louisville to Northern Kentucky in 1967 after he was transferred to work at the Ashland Oil plant on River Road in Cincinnati.
The family settled in Florence, where he was active in the American Legion and Masons.
"He was a member of American Legion Post No. 4 (in Boone County) and served several times as an officer in the post, " said one of his daughters, Susan Cannoy Newman.
"He was also a 32nd-degree member of the Masons, the Scottish Rite and a Shriner."
Mrs. Newman said her father liked to play golf in his younger years.
Later, his main passion was fishing, which took him to many local ponds and streams, Mrs. Newman said.
Other survivors include his wife, Phyllis Morgan Cannoy of Florence; son, James Cannoy of Florence; another daughter, Rebecca Cannoy Parker of Florence; sister, Roberta Daws of Nashville, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Union Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Burial will be in Greenwade Cemetery, Frenchburg.

Larry Wayne Arnold, 43, of Corinth, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Survivors include his brother, Joseph Richard Arnold Jr. of Williamstown and sister, Kathy Arnold of Dry Ridge.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Mount Pisgah Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
Mary B. Budde, 87, of Covington, died at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, Carl F. Budde, died in 1979.
Survivors include her daughters, Rose Brockman and Clairene Hampton, both of Elsmere; sons, Carl Budde Jr. of Erlanger, Raymond Budde of Ludlow and Dennis Budde of Elsmere; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine Church, Covington.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.
Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Alan Lionel Casson Jr., 26, of Latonia, died Wednesday at his home.
Survivors include his daughter, Amber Carisa Casson of Taylor Mill; mother, Debra Ann Casson of Latonia; father, Alan Lionel Casson Sr. and stepmother, Penny Casson, both of Decatur, Ind.; brother, Mike Casson of Latonia; paternal grandfather, Vernon Moore, and step-grandmother, Lucy Moore, both of Boone County; paternal grandmother, Irene Casson, and step-grandfather Virgil Casson, both of Crescent Springs; maternal grandfather, Ray Hacker, and step-grandmother Louise Hacker, both of Dalton, Ga.; maternal grandmother, Ann Pelfrey, and step-grandfather Terry Pelfrey, both of Latonia; and great-grandmother, Macel Smith of Latonia.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Amos "Bud" Roaden, 67, of Burlington, died Friday at Salem Park Care Center, Anderson Township, Ohio.
Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington.
Catherine J. Zai, 78, of Highland Heights, died Friday at the home of her daughter in Fort Thomas.
She was a retired IRS tax examiner in Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Zai Sr. of Highland Heights; sons, Terry W. Lehman of Hamilton, Ohio, Robert L. Zai Jr. of Blue Ash, Ohio, and Brian R. Zai of Fort Thomas; daughters, Pat Schlasinger of Fort Thomas and Barbara Zai Lonergan of Los Altos, Calif.; and 13 grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home.
Entombment will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
