Mrs. Battiston grew up in a small village in the Alps of northern Italy. She moved to Rome as a young woman to work at an Italian radio station and in 1936, while on vacation back home, met her future husband, Fred Battiston.
Mr. Battiston borrowed $50 from his best friend for the wedding, and the two were married, said their son, Roger Battiston of Florence.
After World War II, the couple moved to New Jersey to search of work. They lived with no hot water and went to night school to learn English and attain U.S. citizenship. The Battistons closed the restaurant in 1974. Mr. Battiston died in 1975.
When Mrs. Battiston's son, Roger, moved to Florence in 1990, she moved there, too. Her other son lives in Dayton, Ohio, and she wanted to be close to her grandchildren, Roger Battiston said.
