Edwin A. Monroe Jr., Pendleton attorney
Edwin A. Monroe Jr. was born and raised in Pendleton County and believed in giving back to his community.
Years ago, Mr. Monroe served as city attorney in Falmouth and county attorney for Pendleton. He developed his own private practice later and had generations of families as clients.
He also farmed and served on many civic boards.
"He was a people person. He was outgoing," said Mr. Monroe's wife of 45 years, Julia Montgomery Monroe.
Mr. Monroe, 71, of Falmouth, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was a practicing attorney in Pendleton County for 41 years.
He was a master commissioner for Pendleton County and served as chairman of the board of directors for United Kentucky Bank in Falmouth.
He was also a member of Falmouth Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a former moderator.
Mr. Monroe was a former member of the Pendleton County Farm Bureau board of directors, and a member of the Pendleton County Beef Association, Pendleton County VFW Post No. 109, the Pendleton County Country Club and Orion Lodge No. 222 F&AM.
He owned and operated a working Angus cattle farm in Falmouth.
He was a Korean War veteran.
After receiving his law degree from the University of Kentucky Law School, Mr. Monroe decided to return to Pendleton County rather than move to a larger city, his wife said.
"His main hobbies were reading and farming," Mrs. Monroe said.
Besides his wife, Mr. Monroe is also survived by a son, Edwin A. "Alex" Monroe III of Falmouth; and a brother, Theodore F. Monroe of Vero Beach, Fla.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Craig Alan Bertram, 29, of Newport, died of a gunshot wound Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a sheet metal apprentice with Langdon Inc.
Survivors include his wife, Melanie Bertram; sons, Craig Alan "C. J." Bertram Jr. and Mason Parker Bertram, both at home; a stepson, Kaine Brumley of Brooksville; his parents, Jerrold A. Bertram of Tennessee and Cathy F. Bertram of Covington; and grandmother, Anna M. Tucker of Germantown.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown. Janet Fryer, 69, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a manager of the general store at Kincaid Lake State Park and was a member of Eastside Park Church of Christ, Butler. She was a member of Pendleton County Senior Citizens and the American Legion Women's Auxiliary. Her first husband, Ralph Earles, died in 1985. Her second husband, Raymond Fryer, died in 1996.
Survivors include a son, David Earles of Williamsburg; a daughter, Melanie Tipton of Florence; a brother, Ray Kavanaugh of Falmouth; and three grandsons.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, Pendleton County. Helen M. Herbert, 84, of Rising Sun, Ind., died at 11:27 a.m. Sunday at Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg, Ind. She was a homemaker and a member of Rising Sun United Methodist Church. Her husband, Gilbert John Herbert, died in 1986. A daughter, Betty Billingsley, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, Jack Herbert of Union; a sister, Armetha Turner of Olthea, Kan.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday at Markland Funeral Home, Rising Sun. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 EDT tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rising Sun New Cemetery, Rising Sun. Memorials are suggested to Rising Sun United Methodist Church, Rising Sun, IN 47040.
Irene Morgan Jones, 77, of Lexington, died Sunday at St. Joseph Hospice Care Center, Lexington. She was a retired receptionist with Palm Beach Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Florence Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Elaine J. Baesler of Lexington; and sisters, Evelyn Boone of Elkton and Coletta Moore of Fort Thomas.

Mary Ruth Littrell, 83, of Taylor Mill, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Covington. Her husband, George Littrell Sr., died in 1998.
Survivors include a son, George Littrell Jr. of Independence; daughters, Sue Hegge of Walton and Scheri Fawns of Ryland Heights; a brother, Clyde Bickers of Madison, Ind.; a sister, Winnie Jorgenson of Melbourne, Fla.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Kermit Mallicoat, 89, of Cincinnati, formerly of Boone County, died Sunday at Wesley Hall Nursing Home in Cincinnati. He was a meat packer with Kahn's Meats, Cincinnati, a member of United Food Commercial Workers Union Local No. 7A in Cincinnati and Belleview Baptist Church. A sister, Emma McDaniel, died on Aug. 21.
Survivors include daughters, Ruby Rogers of Troy, Tenn., and Jeanetta Honaker of Chicago; a son, Wesley Mallicoat of Des Plaines, Ill.; a sister, Marie Humphries of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.
Gladys Mason McDonald, 91, of Maysville, died at 5:40 p.m. Saturday at Maysville Extended Care Center. She was a retired employee of Wald Manufacturing Co., Maysville, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Retired Senior Volunteer program. Her husband, Thomas L. McDonald, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Winona Calvert of Cincinnati.

Anne Catherine Menkhaus, 88, of Latonia, died Monday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

Anderson William Moore, 77, of Florence, died at 5:45 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired laborer with Laborer's International Union of North America Local No. 265, Cincinnati. His wife, Aleene Church Moore, died in 1983.
Survivors include daughters, Dee Collins of Newport, Carol Killen of St. George, Utah, Mary Flynn of West Chester, Ohio, and Margaret Loy of Florence; sons, Joseph Moore of Newport, Tom Moore of Columbia, Tenn., and Mike Moore of Florence; 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild.

Brenda Kay Reynolds, 50, of Southgate, died at 2:37 a.m. Saturday at her home. She was a retired installation coordinator for Cincinnati Bell Telephone and a member of Pioneer Club of Cincinnati Bell.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry "Zeke" Reynolds; sons, Jerry B. Reynolds of Henderson, Nev., Robert E. Reynolds of Jackson and John R. Reynolds of Southgate; her father, J. B. Turner of Cold Spring; brothers, Bert Turner of and Kenneth Turner, both of Cold Spring; and three grandchildren.

Virgil Steve Sandru, 34, of Cincinnati, died Saturday at his home. He was a radio recorder with D&R; Radiator Service, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Sandru; a daughter, Shawnna Harris of Cincinnati; sons, Virgil Sandru Jr. and Robert Sandru, both of Cincinnati; his mother, Betty Sandru of Cincinnati; a brother, Chris Durbin of Cincinnati; and sisters, Irene Miley and Brenda Smitze, both of Cincinnati, Marilena Jordan of Tulsa, Okla., Jacqueline Lynn of Newport and Charlene Durbin of Arizona.

Lucille C. Sturgeon, 79, of Fort Mitchell, died at 12:01 p.m. Sunday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. She was an owner of Ernst Fruit Market, Covington. Her husband, Eugene Sturgeon, died in 1993.
Survivors include a son, Michael Sturgeon of Atlanta; daughters, Donna Pendleton of Acworth, Ga., and Sandy Sturgeon of Ludlow; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Entombment will be in Mother of God Mausoleum, Fort Wright.
Dorothy "Scotty" Lauderbach Wieck, 92, of Elsmere, died Monday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere.

Herbert George Williams Sr., 64, of Bellevue, died at 5:05 a.m. Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was disabled.
Survivors include daughters, Valerie Davis of Newport, Mina Cherry of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Leslie Mowbraw of Miami; a son, Herbert George Williams Jr. of Cincinnati; sisters, Nancy Gaboury of Pinellas Park, Juanita Stamper of Erlanger, Judy Geisen of Independence and Brenda Willis of Dayton; brothers, Michael Williams and Russell Williams, both of Pinellas Park, and Patrick Williams of Newport; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
