Sam Roberts, store owner
Back in the days when Hebron was strictly a farming community, Roberts Feed and Implement Store was the center of activity. And Sam E. Roberts was the man who made it happen. . .with, of course, the assistance of his wife, Bessie.
"We operated it from 1945 to 1974," recalls Mrs. Roberts of the former store on Ky. 20 in Hebron. "We sold tractors and machinery for the farm, and sold feed. We also sold hats and riding boots, saddles and bridles and veterinary medicines, and bolts and nuts and parts for all the machinery. Anything the farmer needed."
Mr. Roberts, 92, of Hebron, died Monday evening at the Florence Park Care Center in Florence.
Mrs. Roberts said the couple finally sold the store in 1980, but she said her husband did not stop doing business. He just changed lines.
"He loved trading," said Mrs. Roberts. "So when we sold the store, he went into the trading business. He traded knives, watches, anything he could trade. He just liked to barter. That was the fun part of it. He'd make money or he'd lose money just to get to make a deal."
Mrs. Roberts said her husband also liked to help others. In fact, he was the oldest and longest member of the Hebron Lions Club where he enjoyed helping the underprivileged and sight-impaired for 45 years. Mr. Roberts was also a retired deacon with Bullittsville Christian Church in Burlington.
