Leroy Hubbard, Gold Medal line supervisor
A Cincinnati manufacturing business will close for half the day Friday in homage to one of its oldest and best-loved employees, Leroy Hubbard.
The 62-year-old Independence man died Wednesday after 43 years of service at Gold Medal Products in Evendale, a company he literally grew up with, according to Mr. Hubbard's wife, Pearl.
"They make popcorn and ice cream machines that make all that goody stuff at the fairs," said Mrs. Hubbard.
"He started down on Third Street with them when it first started out and they were very small. Today. . .they have over 300 employees. He couldn't wait to go back to Gold Medal. He thought the world of the people that ran it, and they really respected my husband."
Leroy Hubbard, 62, of Independence, died of cancer Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was an assembly line supervisor.
Mrs. Hubbard said her husband had a knack for dealing with people, and that perhaps is what made him such a good supervisor on the factory floor.
"He knew how to treat people and the people responded," said Mrs. Hubbard.
"He would go to bat for them. He always said, "I'm a boss, I'm a daddy, I'm a babysitter, but I love my people. He was somebody they could rely on."
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Pearl Hubbard; sons, Rickey Hubbard of Cincinnati and Rusty Hubbard of Morning View; a daughter, Brenda Hubbard of Doyle, Tenn.; brothers, Charles Hubbard of Cincinnati and Paul Wendel Hubbard of Miamisburg, Ohio; sisters, Delores Haney of Loveland, Ohio, Charlotte Shelton, Carol Wilhelm and Pauline Earls, all of Kettering, Ohio, and Viola Shelton of Miamisburg; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 8 tonight at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m.
Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery, Middlesboro.

Lauren Nicole Alexander, 10 weeks, daughter of Cameron and Lynn Alexander of Erlanger, died Wednesday at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati.
Other survivors include grandparents, Charles and Peggy Alexander and Mary Lou and Robert Gilbert Sr. of Williamstown.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Elaine Liebermann Caddell, 82, of Lakeside Park, died Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
She was a retired legal bookkeeper with the Nippert & Nippert law firm in Cincinnati, and a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Lakeside Park, Sunny Acres United Methodist Church and Rosebud Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.
A son, John Daniel "Danny" Caddell, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Caddell of Covington; a brother, Norbert Liebermann of Fort Wright; a sister, Marion Liebermann of Erlanger; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel United Methodist Church Chapel, Lakeside Park.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Bill Carl Lewis, 87, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a retired pipefitter and a member of Plumber, Pipefitter and Mechanical Equipment Service Union Local 392, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie Lewis; sons, Don Lewis of Fairfield, Ohio, and Carl Lewis of Yountville, Calif.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington.
Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati.
Alex J. Mackie, 61, of Crescent Springs, died at 8:19 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington.
Ada Mae Minor, 85, of Owenton, died Thursday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton.
She was a homemaker and a member of Owenton United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Raymond Minor, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Betty Long and Angela Renfro, both of Owenton; a sister, Elsie Popp of Lawton, Okla.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Squiresville Cemetery.

Emma Frances Stroud, 84, of Augusta, died Thursday at Augusta Health Care Center.
She was a retired employee of Dr. Scholl's Co., Falmouth, and a member of Augusta Baptist Church.
Husbands, George Jordan and Oscar Stroud, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Junior Stroud of Augusta and Elmer Earl Jordan of Oregon; daughters, Barbara Poe of Frankfort and Betty Manley of Maysville; a brother, Roy Reed of Foster; half-sisters, Susie Strough and Margie Stewart, both of Florence, and Rosie Allender of Foster; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lennoxburg Cemetery.
