Wayne Bridges, attorney and Post law columnist
G. Wayne Bridges, a Covington attorney who wrote a weekly law column for The Kentucky Post, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South. He was 67.
Mr. Bridges, an Independence resident, practiced law in Covington for 40 years. For 17 years, he wrote "You and the Law" for the Post, a column on legal issues pertinent to everyday people. His most recent column was published on Wednesday.
Law was Mr. Bridges' passion, said his son and colleague Gailen Bridges, and his family knew he would never retire.
"He loved law," Gailen Bridges said. "He practiced law the day he died."
The elder Bridges had gone out after work Friday night and, around 11 p.m., had a heart attack while lying in bed. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Mr. Bridges was a well-respected lawyer in the state and the community, winning such awards as Kentucky Lawyer of the Year in 1986 and the Northern Kentucky Bar Association's Lifetime Achievement Award.
He was a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Kentucky Bar Association and the Kentucky Academy of Trial Lawyers. He was also the manager of the the Kentucky Law Journal and a member of Phi Alpha legal fraternity. In 1995, he was chosen to sit in as a special justice for the Kentucky Supreme Court and wrote the majority opinion on an appeal by the city of Covington in a case about its Employee Pension Fund.
Mr. Bridges practiced law with his son and state Rep. Tom Kerr, D-Taylor Mill.
Kerr called Mr. Bridges the "most generous man I've ever met." The two were introduced by their pastor 23 years ago, soon after Kerr graduated from law school. Mr. Bridges took Kerr under his wing.
"I looked to him as my mentor," Kerr said. "We became more than associates - we were close friends." Born in Fiskburg in southern Kenton County in 1933, Mr. Bridges graduated from the University of Kentucky law school in 1957 and later moved with his wife to a farm in Independence. Farming was a love of his, as well as gardening, Gailen said.
His father would grow tomatoes to take to his friends and business partners, Gailen said. The family was a close one, Gailen said. He and one of his brothers live within a mile of the family farm and Mr. Bridges' only daughter lives within three miles.
Mr. Bridges attended Calvary Baptist Church in Covington. He was a Sunday school teacher for 28 years and a trustee and deacon. He also co-founded weekly Christian Business Association in the 1970s.
