John Murphy, former deputy, bailiff
Northern Kentucky has lost a respected member of the law enforcement community.
John P. Murphy, a former Kenton County deputy sheriff and circuit court bailiff, died at 7:55 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was 85.
As a deputy sheriff, Mr. Murphy, of Covington, was assigned to the commonwealth attorney's office and worked with John J. O'Hara, Frank Trusty and Don Buring, and was a bailiff with Judge Ray Lape.
"You didn't have to worry when John was in the courtroom," recalled Judge Lape. "Everything was in order."
"A lot of people are going to miss him. He was certainly well thought of - a straight-arrow guy," the judge added. "He was very principled. That's what people will remember."
In addition to working as a deputy sheriff, he was a retired "sweet" milk man.
He was a member of St. Benedict Church, Covington, and was an avid fundraiser for the church, having been a founder of the Holy Name Raffle. The raffle continues after more than 50 years. Mr. Murphy also helped start bingo at the church.
He served as a lector with the church, a server and was active with the church Holy Name Society. He came to be known as "Monsignor" Murphy to the church community. He helped organize the Class of '37, a group from the church which traveled every year to Pennsylvania to visit the Benedictine priests at St. Vincent Abbey.
Mr. Murphy was secretary of the Lookout Social Bowling League for 40 years and a member of the Northern Kentucky Baseball Hall of Fame. He was an honorary member of the Sixth Ward Social Club in Covington and an Army veteran of World War II.
He and his wife celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on the day he died.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Herzog Murphy; sons, Pat Murphy of Cold Spring, Mike Murphy of Covington and Tim Murphy of Lakeside Park; a daughter, Margie "Maggie" Murphy of Los Angeles; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Benedict Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6:45 p.m. Monday at the church. A reception will follow the Mass in the Holy Family School Hall. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Latonia.

Louise L. Carpenter, 68, of Carrollton, died Thursday at Carroll County Hospital, Carrollton. She was a retired chef with St. Charles Care Center, Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Carpenter Sr.; sons, Charles Carpenter Jr. of Fort Wright and Roy Carpenter of Ludlow; daughters, Charlotte Lokesak of Park Hills and Patricia Wills of Elsmere; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
Cora D. Carter, 101, of Vevay, Ind., formerly of Latonia, died Wednesday at Swiss Villa Living Center, Vevay. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John Montgomery Carter, and son, John Rhodes Carter, both preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor mill. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Curralleen Embree, 96, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired paper varnisher for The Chatfield Paper Company, Cincinnati.
Survivors include sister, Thelma Foster, Highland Heights.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, Ft. Thomas.
Arrangements are being handled by Cooper Funeral Home, Alexandria.
Rosetta Hayes, 63, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired cook and a homemaker.
Survivors include six sons, four daughters, eight brothers, 33 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7:30 tonight at Robbins Street Christian Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Helen Theresa Heimbrock, 94, of Fort Mitchell, died at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday at Madonna Manor Nursing Home, Villa Hills.
She was a retired data gatherer with Dubois Chemical Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and Senior Citizens of Fort Mitchell.
Survivors include a sister, Louise Lampke of Fort Wright; nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial was this morning at Madonna Manor. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Sharon Jarman, 42, of Covington, died Tuesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a data processor with Procter and Gamble, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her husband, John T. Jarman; a son, Andre B. Clark of Cincinnati; sisters, Leona Buchanan and Sandra Carr, both of Cincinnati; and a brother, Michael Clark of Woodbridge, Va.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at United Community Church, Covington. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Stella A. Parrott, 91, of Erlanger, died Thursday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

Wilma Jean Saxon, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Monday at Arlington Court nursing home in Columbus.
She was a retired employee of St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington, and a member of Robbins Street Christian Church, Covington. Her husband, Isaiah Saxon, died in 1998.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Saxon; a son, Nathaniel Saxon; sisters, Mary Elson, Evelyn Collins, Helen Long, Minnie Kendrick, Tempia Berry, Algie Turner and Laura Duncan; brothers, Charles Thomas and James Daniels; and five grandchildren.
Services were this morning at Faith Ministries Interdenominational Church, Columbus. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery. Diehl-Whittaker Funeral Home, Columbus, handled arrangements.
Willard Howard Smith, 78, of Holiday, Fla., formerly of Owenton, died Saturday in Holiday. He was a retired U.S. Army sergeant and a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Cobb Smith; a son, Clayton Smith of Holiday; daughters, Doreen Smith and Penney Smith, both of Holiday; brothers, Robert Smith of Bardstown, Kenneth Smith of Elizabethtown, Melvin Smith of Cookeville, Tenn., Ralph Smith of Indianapolis and Terry Smith of Bethlehem; and a sister, Doris Smith Gaines of Owenton.

George J. Wetterstroem, 84, of Dayton, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a milk deliverer with Sealtest Dairy and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia "Eddie" Wetterstroem; sons, Daniel Wetterstroem of Southgate and Greg Wetterstroem of Dayton; a daughter, Mary Jo Wickelhaus of Fort Thomas; sisters, Mary Jane Koester, Dorothy Wetterstroem and Rosemary Wetterstroem, all of Cincinnati; a brother, Robert Wetterstroem of Fort Myers, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
