Robert Dietrich was devoted to family, church, volunteering

When Robert Dietrich retired after 33 years in air traffic control, his family says he did anything but take it easy. In fact, he took off in whole new directions - college student, school board member, volunteer, and father of the brides.

"He retired in 1973 when he was 53," said his wife, Katherine Dietrich. "But he had three daughters that got married that same year. . .and he pursued his college degree in business. But he never went back to work, he spent all his time volunteering."

Mr. Dietrich, 79, of Fort Mitchell, died at 9:32 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was an air traffic controller supervisor with Lunken and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International airports, a profession he learned in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

When he retired from the airport in 1973, he returned to school to complete his business degree at Thomas More College.

Then he donated his skills to assist retired individuals in preparing their tax returns.

He also served a two-year term as a member of the Beechwood School Board, and was a charter member and first president of the Dixie Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

But Mrs. Dietrich said her husband's professional and philanthropic activities always took a back seat to his family and faith.

Mr. Dietrich was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell, where he had served on the parish council and as a lay minister and lector.

"Church and faith - that's one thing he wanted to leave as a legacy to his children, that God should be the center of our lives," said Mrs. Dietrich.
