George Stafford, devoted to family
George Earl Stafford fought against the Nazis in World War II, started his own successful business and was devoted to his family.
As his son puts it, George Stafford was just an average, nice guy. But Mr. Stafford's son, Gregory Thomas Stafford of Rising Sun, Ind., said he now understands how extraordinary that can be.
"I guess his claim to fame was being a great husband to my mother and a good dad to me," Gregory Stafford said.
"There was nothing otherwise he was famous for, but I think that was pretty good."
Mr. Stafford, 79, of Erlanger, died at 1:09 p.m. Tuesday at Village Care Center in Erlanger.
Mr. Stafford retired 15 years ago from the company he owned and managed, G. E. Stafford and Associates. He began the company after leaving the corporate world and deciding to "run his own ship," his son said.
"He really liked being the captain of his own ship where everything was based on his own success," said his son.
Mr. Stafford was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps. He was an artillery spotter and pilot who achieved the rank of captain.
He was a member of the Fort Mitchell Baptist Church, Summit Hills Country Club and Holmes High School Alumni Association.
His first wife, Ruth Stafford, died in 1992.
His second wife, Virginia Stafford, also preceded him in death.
Other survivors include a brother, Charles Leonard Stafford of Warner Robins, Ga.; and a sister, Dorothy Evelyn Brauntz of Novato, Calif.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Wanda Wilshire Black, 75, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Michael Black of Newport; sisters, Jean Richmond of Bromley, Tevis Sorrell of Alexandria, George Brumfield of Bellevue and Laura Reenan of Covington.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
William A. Burkhouse, 50, of Burlington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a Realtor with ReMax Affiliates in Fort Mitchell and a member of the Gideons.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Burkhouse; a son, Eric Burkhouse of Holland, Texas; a daughter, Rachel Burkhouse of Holland; a stepdaughter, Amanda Napier of Burlington; his father, Walter Burkhouse of New Bedford, Pa.; brothers, Charles Burkhouse and Wilbur Burkhouse, both of the state of California; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Orman Conrad, 85, of Falmouth, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday at his home.
Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Virgil Louis Duncan, 74, of Crittenden, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired trucker with J. H. Stewart & Son Trucking Co., Cincinnati, and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include a son, Joe Duncan of Florida; a daughter, Jeria Louis Duncan of Ohio; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
Nancy Young Humes, 74, of Williamstown, died at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a former employee of Arvin Industries, Franklin, Ind., and a member of Mason Baptist Church. Her husband, John S. Humes Jr., died in 1967.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Hunt of Illinois; a son, Raymond Denney of Copperas Cove, Texas; sisters, Mary Emerick of Indianapolis and Sally Smith of Science Hill; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and Charles R. Thomas, with whom she shared a home.

Peter A. Kelsch, Jr., 71, of Augusta, died Wednesday at Augusta Health Care Center. He was a retired farmer and a member of St. Augustine Church in Augusta. His wife, Rose Annette List Kelsch, died in 1998.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Kelsch of Augusta; nieces and nephews.

Gladys Rebecca Marie Klopp, 98, of Petersburg, died Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a homemaker and a member of Petersburg Christian Church. She was a member of Petersburg Homemakers, Petersburg Senior Citizens, Boone County 4-H and the Utopia Club.
Survivors include a stepbrother, Walter "Hub" Kirkpatrick of Erlanger; a niece, Agnes Scott of Belleview; and a nephew, Don Klopp of Petersburg.

Grady L. Massengale Sr., 54, of Florence, died Tuesday at his home. He was a truck driver with Kroger Co., a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 100 in Cincinnati, and a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Massengale; a daughter, Melissa Dawn Massengale of Florence; a son, Sgt. Grady L. Massengale Jr. of Camp LeJeune, N.C.; his mother and stepfather, Martha and John Haddock of Haddock, Ga.; brothers, Edward Massengale, Henry Massengale and Thomas Massengale, all of Haddock.

James David Perkins, 36, of Richmond, formerly of Owen County, died Monday in an accident at Winchester Coating Co. He was an employee of Winchester Coating and a member of Owenton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include sisters, Shirley Perkins of Valparaiso, Ind., Barbara Cammack of Jonesville, Kathryn Vassallo of Baltimore, Md., Joyce Lyons of Bethlehem, Pa., and Mary Cammack of Villa Hills.
