Joseph Matracia, 69, was A-1 business, family man
Joseph Matracia was a successful businessman who found plenty of time for family and friends.
Mr. Matracia, 69, the former owner of A-1 Liquors and Matracia Produce in Covington, died Wednesday at his home in Lakeside Park.
Born in Covington and raised in Fort Mitchell, Mr. Matracia grew up in the produce business. Many of his friends also were in the business.
In the 1970s, he opened A-1 Liquors on Fourth Street, which for years was one of the city's biggest liquor stores, and closed his wholesale produce business a few years later. After almost two decades, he also sold the liquor store. A Taco Bell now sits where the liquor store operated.
He was a hard worker who loved to work in the yard or his gardens after he retired, said his son, Vincent Matracia of Fort Mitchell.
Working in the public for so many years, Mr. Matracia created a diverse group of friends, his son said.
"He was loved by everybody," Vincent Matracia said. "He touched so many people, it was unbelieveable."
Mr. Matracia was a witty man who had a large group of close friends, his son said. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and was always there for his family and friends.
"He was one of those people you could always go to," his son said. "It didn't matter what kind of mood he was in; he made you smile."
Other survivors include his wife, Marie Collins Matracia; sons, Joseph Matracia Jr. of Florence and David Matracia of Taylor Mill; a daughter, Annette Gabbard of Crestview Hills, and eight grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

William Fleetwood Beamon, 46, of Indianapolis, formerly of Pendleton County, died Wednesday at his home.

Wanda Wilshire Black, 75, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Michael Black of Newport; sisters, Jean Richmond of Bromley, Tevis Sorrell of Alexandria, Georgia Brumfield of Bellevue and Laura Reenan of Covington.

Emma J. Neal Blunt, 75, of Lakeside Park, died Wednesday at her home. She was a waitress with Pompilio's in Newport and B&G; Restaurant, Cincinnati, and a member of Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary, Newport. Her husband, Ronald Blunt, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Jeannina "Kay" Schoettle of Lakeside Park; sisters, Glenda Baker of Peoria, Ariz., Ruth Ann Chrisman of Cincinnati and Alene Hamm of Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

William A. Burkhouse, 50, of Burlington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a realtor with ReMax Affiliates in Fort Mitchell and a member of the Gideons.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Burkhouse; a son, Eric Burkhouse of Holland, Texas; a daughter, Rachel Burkhouse of Holland; a stepdaughter, Amanda Napier of Burlington; his father, Walter Burkhouse of New Bedford, Pa.; brothers, Charles Burkhouse and Wilbur Burkhouse, both of the state of California; and five grandchildren.

Mattie Lee Cooper Colliver, 88, of Melbourne, died at 5 a.m. Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker and a member of Oakland United Methodist Church, Melbourne. She was a also a volunteer with Veterans Administration Nursing Home in Fort Thomas. Her husband, William Raymond Colliver, died in 1984.
Survivors include daughters, Deborah Sue Schmidt and Darlene Hall, both of Alexandria; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Orman Wilhoit Conrad Sr., 85, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at his home. He was a retired farmer and a charter member and deacon with Trinity Southern Baptist Church, Falmouth.

Maurice Frederick Greifenkamp, 71, of Loveland, Ohio, died at noon Wednesday at his home. He was a tool and die maker with the Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati, and a member of the United Auto Workers and Catholic Order of Foresters.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Greifenkamp; a daughter, Anne Greifenkamp; sons, Mark Greifenkamp, Tom Greifenkamp, Sean Greifenkamp and Scott Greifenkamp; and two grandsons.

Albert "Barry" Norman, 61, of Covington, died at 5:15 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was an office manager with Rhinestahl Corp. and a member of the Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati sports halls of fame.

Jean A. Pence, 72, of Dry Ridge, died at 6:15 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired sergeant first class in the U.S. Army, and a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
