Jean Ries, loved golf, tennis
For 13 years, Jean L. Linstaedt Ries was the first lady of Crestview Hills.
Mrs. Ries wasn't a political person, but she supported her husband, former Mayor Harold A. Ries, during all of his campaigns.
"She said she knew I liked doing it," said Mr. Ries, who is now a member of the Crestview Hills City Council.
"The last time, I said I was going to quit as mayor. But she said, 'You have to do your jo b.' She was supportive of me."
Mrs. Ries, 79, of Crestview Hills, died at 3 a.m. Thursday at Atria Summit Hills in Crestview Hills.
Mrs. Ries was born and raised in Newport. She and her husband of 55 years graduated together from Newport High School, where they were prom dates.
Mrs. Ries was an excellent golfer.
She was a member of the Summit Hills Country Club, where she was the winner of the Northern Kentucky Ladies Amateur in 1968. She was also a former winner of the Summit Hills Ladies Club Championship, and was an accomplished bowler and tennis player. She was once ranked as the third-best tennis player in Kentucky while in high school.
A son, Dick Ries of Lakeside Park, and a grandson, Michael Ries, who recently graduated from college, are also excellent golfers.
"She was an excellent mother," Mr. Ries said. "She was very athletic, but she was quiet. S he would never brag on herself. She was very modest."
Mrs. Ries also is survived by another son, Bob Ries of Boone County, and four grandchildren.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m . Sunday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Nancy Ann Allen, 41, of Morning View, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a member of Morning View Methodist Church.
Survivors include daughters, Amanda Allen of Covington, Rachel Allen and Holly Allen, both of Boone County; brothers, David Allen and John Allen, both of Morning View; and sisters, Cathy Freeman of Florence, Jessica Perry of Covington and Dottie Kaye Allen of Williamstown.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Burial will be in Wilmington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Nancy Allen Burial Fund, in care of Peoples Funeral Home, P. O. Box 34, Butler, Ky. 41006.
Marie Anna Weinbrecht Beuke, 101, of Newport, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Newport. Her husband, Ben Beuke, preceded her in death.
Survivors include grandnieces and grandnephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Estelle J. Stubbs Christy, 66, of Walton, died Tuesday at the St. Elizabeth Hospice Center in Covington. She was a bookkeeper for Metal Craft in Erlanger, a member of the First Baptist Church of Walton, Member of the W.A.N.A. Club in Louisville, and was active with the Girl Scouts.
Survivors include her husband, Orlando Christy; sons, William Ryan Christy of Jacksonville, Fla., Michael Eric Christy of Newport News, Va., and Matthew Dane Christy of Walton; daughters, Allyson Jarczyk of Orange Park, Fla., and Laurel J. Sizemore of Covington; brother, William K. Stubbs of Grand Rapids, Mich.; sister, Mary Ruth Johnson of Dothan, Ala. and seven grandchildren .
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Walton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Virginia L. DeRossett, 82, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired meat worker with Liberal Market.
Survivors include a daughter, Florence Tisa of Highland Heights; sons, David DeRossett of New York and Timothy DeRossett of Florida; a brother, Tim Withrow of Florida; sisters, Joan Wiechman of Highland Heights, Jean Johnson of Southgate and Kitty Shouse of Southgate; three grandchildre n and two great-grandchildren.

Julia E. Goodwin, 85, of Lexington, Okla., formerly of Newport, died July 26 at Lexi ngton Nursing Home. She was a retired nurse with Booth Memorial Hospital in Covington and a nursing ho me in Lake Wales, Fla., and a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, Purcell, Okla. Her first husban d, Bernard L. Schafstall, died in 1957.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Goodwin; a son, Bernard J. Schafstall of Lexington, Okla.; daughters, Mary Jule Gronefeld of Erlanger, JoAnn Flannery of Cincinnati, Patricia Bunner of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Mary Castleberry of St. Joseph, Mo.; a sister, Viola Fries of Cincinnati; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were July 29 at Our Lady of Victory Church, Purcell. Wadley's Funeral Hom e, Purcell, is handling arrangements.
Gregory Martin Keller, 37, of Edgewood, died at 1:25 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a biochemist with Precision Packaging Co.
Survivors include his parents, Marsha K. Hagen Keller and Daniel J. Keller of Edgewood; and brothers, Doug Keller of Hebron, Paul Keller of Milan, Ind., David Keller of Covington and Tim Keller of Crescent Springs.

Lucille Harris Leach, 89, of Falmouth, died Thursday at River Valley Nursing Home, B utler. She was a member of Crooked Creek Baptist Church, Pendleton County. Her husband, Stanley Leach, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Doris Hardin of Falmouth and Frances Leach Griffin of Fort Mitchell; sons, William Leach of Pendleton County and Melvin Leach of Fort Thomas; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Viola May Lukey, 87, of Cincinnati, formerly of Ludlow, died Wednesday at the Riverv iew Nursing Home in Cincinnati. She was a retired sales clerk for Pogues department store and a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Bromley. Her husband, Harold J. Lukey, died in 1982.
Survivors include daughters, Sylvia Evans of Tampa, Fla., and Brenda May of Covington; sons, Gary Lukey of Edgewood, Brent Lukey of Independence and Harry Lukey of Freeport, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Nettie Burriss O'Brien, 90, of Warsaw, died at 5:44 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired seamstress with Hyde Park Clothing Co., Newport, and a member of Faith Community United Methodist Church, Independence. Her husband, Roy O'Brien, die d in 1966. A daughter, Lois Ann O'Brien, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Roy C. O'Brien of Warsaw; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery, Bracken County.
Mary H. Shea, 74, of Edgewood, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a former secretary with the Edgewood Police Department and a retired administrative secretary with St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She also was a former hospice volunteer, a former member of the Thoroughbreds Club of Lookout Farms, and a member of the Christ Renews His Parish and Widow and Widowers Club at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Her husband, Thomas M. Shea, died in 1972.
Survivors include daughters, Barbara Barczak of Fort Mitchell and Maureen Avery of Westfield, Mass.; a son, Thomas M. Shea Jr. of Rome, Ga.; sisters, Hilda Conti of Freehold, N.J., Bernardine Culligan of Mahwah, N.J., and Nancy Dormady of Hilton Head, S.C.; a brother, Joseph Culligan of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.

Martha Katherine Stidham, 74, of Bellevue, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired nurse with Booth Hospital, Covington, and a member of St. Anthony Church in Bellevue. She was a member of the church Altar Society and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. A son, Harold "Pop" Stidham, died in 1998.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Stidham; a daughter, Susan Minton of Cincinnati and Nan cy Sharp of Cold Spring; sons, Dave Stidham of Raleigh, N.C., and Mike Stidham of Bellevue; a sister, Eileen Draime of Fort Thomas; and six grandchildren.

Oma McNeese Whitley, 70, of Newport, died Thursday at Clermont Nursing Center, Milfo rd, Ohio. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, Covington. Her husband, Alvin Whitley, die d in 1972.
Survivors include brothers, Ira McNeese of Falmouth, Paul McNeese of Fort Thomas, Charles McNeese of Covington and John McNeese of Florence; and sisters, Kathleen Haley of Butler, Marcella Finnell of Taylor Mill, Evely Baumstark of Williamstown, Mary Hisle of Falmouth and Bonnie Gray of Covington.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
Richard A. Zumbiel, 97, of Lakeside Park, died at 10:05 a.m. Wednesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. He was a retired manufacturer with Zumbiel Packaging Co., Cincinnati, a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a brother, Thomas Zumbiel of Crescent Springs; nieces and nephews.
