Virginia Tanner, restaurant worker
Being a cook and a waitress at several Northern Kentucky restaurants kept Virginia Lee Tanner busy, but she always found time for others, especially her family.
From the 1950s through the 1970s, she worked at Bob and Jean's in Florence, Burns Brothers Truck Stop, the White Horse, Retschulte's and at Latonia Race Track.
She also worked briefly in the cafeteria at Lloyd Memorial High School in Erlanger.
Mrs. Tanner was a tiny, dark-haired woman with a huge capacity for making friends.
She was energetic, conscientious and outgoing, said a son, Charles S. Tanner of Union.
"She taught me a lot about honesty and hard work," he said.
Mrs. Tanner, 75, died Thursday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence.
Another son, Edward Lee Tanner of Elsmere, said his mother always found time to help someone who needed a hand.
"If somebody was sick, she was there," he said.
Mrs. Tanner and her husband of 57 years, Charles F. Tanner, raised five children.
As the family grew, Mrs. Tanner enjoyed grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Tanner raised flowers as well as children, and she and her husband enjoyed drives in the country.
She was a member of Elsmere Baptist Church.
Her health started to fail in the 1970s. Through her retirement she dealt with heart problems, back problems and kidney problems.
"They're a close family. They all took care of each other," said her sister-in-law, Bernice Meeker of Fort Wright.
Mrs. Tanner moved to Florence Park Care Center this week.
Other survivors include daughters, Betty Stiene of Burlington and Nancy Dauwe of Walton; a son Dennis Ray Tanner of Florence; a sister, Alice Gray of West Covington; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will be from noon until the time of the services Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Elwood Browning, 70, of Demossville, died Thursday at the Meadowview Hospice Center in Maysville.
He was retired from General Motors in Norwood, Ohio, and the Fuller Manufacturing Co. in Falmouth.
He was a member of the Butler Full Gospel Church in Butler.
Survivors include his wife, Glenna Browning; sons, David Browning of Williamstown and Larry Browning, Terry Browning, Jeff Browning and Kenny Browning, all of Butler; a daughter, Linda Robins of Butler; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Sunday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Floyd Gritton Jr., 75, of Owenton, died Thursday at his residence.
He worked with the Kraft Dairy for 42 years and was a substitute teacher at Owen County High School.
He was a Shriner, a Mason and an Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Nevis. Survivors include a son, Marc Gritton of Pewee Valley; daughters, Judy Cull, Sally Patterson and June Osborne, all of Owen County; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Owen County High School.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street location, Owenton.
Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.

Viola May Lukey, 87, of Cincinnati, formerly of Ludlow, died Wednesday at the Riverview Nursing Home in Cincinnati.
She was a retired sales clerk for Pogue's department store and a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Bromley.
Her husband, Harold J. Lukey, died in 1982. Survivors include daughters, Sylvia Evans of Tampa, Fla., and Brenda May of Covington; sons, Gary Lukey of Edgewood, Brent Lukey of Independence and Harry Lukey of Freeport, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Immanuel United Church of Christ.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Mary Louise Mutchler, 83, of Fort Thomas, died Friday at her residence.
A homemaker, she was a member of St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas, and a member of the St. Thomas Club 55, the St. Thomas Rosary Society, the Mother's Club and the Homemaker's Club at the church.
Her husband, John R. Mutchler, died in 1984. A son, John R. Mutchler, and grandson, Johnny Mutchler, died in 1970. Survivors include sons, David Mutchler of Bethesda, Md., and Patrick Mutchler of Philadelphia, Pa.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Dallas N. Wardell, 59, of Bromley, died Thursday at his residence.
He was a retired polisher for Leonhardt Plating Co., Cincinnati, and an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Ann Nelson Wardell; daughters, Kimberly Mattingly of Fort Thomas, Tammy Mattingly of Covington and Ginny Watkins and Jayne Carol Wardell, both of Bromley; a son, James M. Wardell of Big Stone Gap, Va.; sisters, Wanda Griffith of LaFollette, Tenn., and Wilma Traft of Bromley; brothers, Bill Waddell of Independence and Ronnie Wardell of Eli; and 14 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial, with VFW honors, will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery, Hebron.

Betty Arnold Wright, 76, of Falmouth, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
Survivors include her husband, Beverly Wright Jr.; a daughter, Diane Cookendorfer of Falmouth; brothers, Charles Lemmon Jr. of Falmouth and Donald Lemmon of Colorado; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.
There will be no visitation.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
