Ralph W. Husted urged lifelong learning
Ralph W. Husted, business executive, civic leader, lawyer and a proponent of lifelong education, died Monday at the Rabbit Hash home of his daughter, Catherine Anne Burleigh.
He was 89.
Mr. Husted was born in Illinois and built his career in Indiana, where he retired as chairman and CEO of Indianapolis Power & Light and helped conceive the Liberty Fund - the largest private educational foundation of its type in the country.
He was president of the Indiana Council of Social Agencies in 1939 and 1940 and served on and led the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners in the 1950s and 1960.
He also served on boards from United Way to the Indiana State Symphony Society and was a national trustee for the Eisenhower Scholarship Foundation, the American Center for Judicial Studies and the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, which is a private educational foundation in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
He and his wife, Margaret Walden Husted, moved to Rabbit Hash in 1999, after he developed severe emphysema.
His health was failing, but his mind remained sharp and his wit quick. Upon retiring, he set a goal of reading the great books of the Western world, from the ancient Greek thinkers forward. He continued the plan in Rabbit Hash.
"He was Lincolnesque," said his son-in-law, Bill Burleigh, chairman and CEO of E.W. Scripps Co., which owns The Post.
"He came from the Illinois prairie and had great rock-bottom values that he taught to his children and his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren," said Burleigh, who met Mr. Husted in 1963, when Burleigh was courting Mr. Husted's daughter, Anne.
"He had a lot to do with giving me confidence in my values as a young man, learning from someone you respect, realizing it's all right to believe certain things and fight for the things you believe in," Burleigh said.
"I don't think there was anybody he knew who did not profit from knowing him. He laid himself on the line for the Indianapolis School Board. His whole life was education in one form or another."
Mr. Husted also appreciated the power and beauty of nature. When the Burleighs were considering buying their home in rural Rabbit Hash, Mr. Husted was enthusiastic. "He said, 'There's no decision - buy it.' " Burleigh said.
In the past 18 months, Mr. Husted enjoyed watching the deer, wild turkey and birds from his bedroom window. His public life was stellar, but it was his private life of which he was most proud. "The business stuff was his career. His family was his life," Burleigh said.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife, Margaret; a son, David W. Husted of New Palestine, Ind.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
