Nurse Bess Kottmyer 'listened'
Bess Reeves Kottmyer used her hands and her heart as an occupational health nurse.
"She helped and listened to a lot of people and their problems and gave them positive input," said her daughter, Susan Carole Kottmyer of Hebron. "She just lit up around people."
Mrs. Kottmyer, 81, of Hebron, died Monday at her home.
She was a retired registered nurse with the U.S. Department of Public Health Services/O.F.O.H. She also worked as a nurse at the Heekin Can Co. in Cincinnati and for the Environmental Protection Agency.
Her last job was occupational health nurse at the Internal Revenue Service in Covington, where she retired, her daughter said.
Her leisure activities included boating, traveling and collecting antiques. She also enjoyed her homestead on the Ohio River, her daughter said. The family has 7 1/2 acres with a view of the river.
Mrs. Kottmyer was a strong Republican and involved in party politics, her daughter said.
She was a member of Constance Church of the Brethren, a former president of the Boone County Homemakers Club and a member of American Occupational Health Nurses Association. Her husband, James W. Kottmyer, died in 1993.
Other survivors include daughters, Jane Lynn Kottmyer of Ludlow and Linda Anne Stainforth of Venice, Fla., and a sister, Alberta Phoebe Rotan of Cincinnati; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hebron Lutheran Cemetery.

Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron, is handling arrangements.
Richard H. Blaker, 74, of Florence, died Tuesday at his home.

Ruel Jason Brown, 78, of Corinth, died Monday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Lexington. He was a retired farmer and a member of Corinth Christian Church. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, Darrell Brown and David Brown, both of Williamstown, Donald Brown of Louisa and Kevin Brown of Lexington; daughters, Rhonda Fiscus of Corinth and Kimberly Brown of Solon, Ohio; a brother, Homer Brown of Corinth; a sister, Clarice Jenkins of Corinth; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Eckler Cemetery, Corinth. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, Ky. 40504.
Geneva Roach Gore, 80, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Robertson County, died Monday at Heart Health Care and Retirement Center, Jacksonville. She was a retired factory supervisor. Her husband, Walter Wood "Jack" Gore, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, John Clark of Chicago; daughters, Joyce Beck of Jacksonville and Yvonne Yurko of Tinley Garden, Ill.; sisters, Bertha Taylor of Kentucky, Ruth Barnett of Chicago, Maxine Tandy and Mildred Wheat, both of Mesa, Ariz., and Martha Jean Hamlett of West Port, Ind.

Gordon S. Haley, 88, of Falmouth, died Monday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was a file supervisor with the Internal Revenue Service and a member of Augusta Church of the Nazarene, Disabled American Veterans Post No. 109 and VFW Post No. 1978 in Falmouth. He was a World War II veteran. His wife, Mabel Miller Haley, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons, Allen Haley of Falmouth, Gordon E. Haley of Covington and Michael Haley of Fort Thomas; daughters, Betty Lou Pastor and Roberta J. Wood, both of Augusta; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Johnsville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Larry A. Hicks, 63, of Owenton, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was an auto body detailer and a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Frankfort.
Survivors include his wife, Sonda Tackman Hicks; a son, Mat Hicks of Crittenden; a daughter, Malinda Hicks of Owenton; brothers, Clifford Hicks, Hank Hicks and Robert Hicks, all of Muncie, Ind.; and a sister, Wanda Herndon of Sparta.

Riley Louis Hildebrant, son of Mark L. and Eva L. Hildebrant of Burlington, was stillborn Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Other survivors include grandparents, Fred and Lynn Hildebrant of Ludlow, Jerry and Diana Woods of Pell City, Ala., and Ralph Faulkinberry of Calhoun, Ga.; and great- grandparents, Lou and Rita Chalfant of Covington, Virgil R. Joyce L. Palmer, 71, of Florence, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a dispatcher with the Florence Police Department and a former cashier with Rink's Department Store, Florence. She was a secretary with M&D; Insulation and a member of the Women's Auxiliary of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423, Elsmere. A son, Sgt. Robert P. Palmer, died in 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Palmer of Cincinnati; sons, Les Palmer and Darrel Palmer, both of Florence; sisters, Marilyn Rexing of Evansville, Ind., Doris Layton of Owensboro and Nancy White of Gary, Ind.; a brother, Clarence Morris of Cadiz; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Raymond J. Sterling, 72, of Covington, died at 5:29 a.m. Monday at his home. He as a manufacturing technician with Ford Motor Co., a member of Bellevue Vets and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Violet Sterling; sons, Raymond Sterling II, Stephen Sterling, Kent Sterling and Keith Sterling, all of Taylor Mill; daughters, Saundra Elleson of Florence, Melissa Hart of Fort Thomas, Cynthia Schuler of Fort Wright and Theresa Sterling of Latonia; brothers, Elmer Sterling of Edgewood and Howard Sterling of Park Hills; sisters, Helen Ferris of Collinsville, Ill., and Dolores Shell of Cleveland; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ruth M. Stines, 80, of Dayton, died at 4:30 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Sand Run Baptist Church, Hebron. Her husband, John D. Stines, died in 1973.
Survivors include daughters, Loretta Ann McAfee of Springfield, Tenn., Marylou Crawford of Largo, Fla., and Melissa Keeton of Falmouth; sons, Robert Weber of Kingsport, Tenn., John David Stines of Cincinnati, Steven Weber of Alexandria and Michael R. Stines and Greg Scherer, both of Newport; a brother, Edward Goehring of Yuba City, Calif.; 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Martha Louise Reed Troendle, 84, of Newport, died at 11:15 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired teacher with Newport Public Schools. Her husband, Ernest Troendle, died in 1983.
Survivors include a daughter, Denise Lan ning of Denver; sons, Timothy Troendle and Stephen Troendle, both of Newport; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Thursday at St. Paul Episcopal Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Virginia May Wright, 85, of Maysville, died Monday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mount Olivet. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Stanton Wright, died in 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynette Gifford of Maysville; sisters, Doris Gifford of Mount Olivet and Lillian Rose of Cynthiana; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown.
