Former Grant County Sheriff Charles E. Hudson
Former long-time Grant County Sheriff Charles E. Hudson died of cancer at 8:20 a.m. Thursday at his home in Williamstown.
Mr. Hudson, 64, was named the 2000 Grant Countian of the Year and served as the last grand marshal of the Grant County Marigold Festival.
Mr. Hudson retired in 1997 as sheriff. He had been re-elected to the position twice, serving a total of 12 years. He also served four years as deputy sheriff of Grant County.
He was active in a broad assortment of community organizations, and was the first Grant County sheriff to succeed himself in office. But his family says he may be remembered best for his devotion to helping the area's youth.
"He kept the DARE program going in the county . . . and every year he took under-privileged kids to the county sheriff's camp," said Mr. Hudson's daughter, Rekenna Hopperton. "He just had a real good relationship with young people."
Earlier, Mr. Hudson owned Sunoco service stations in Crittenden and Williamstown and served 15 years as a dispatcher at Kentucky State Police posts in Madisonville, Frankfort and Dry Ridge.
At one time he attempted to blend his policing duties with his other love - for Tennessee walking horses.
"At one time we started the Sheriff's Posse, but unfortunately, it didn't last," said Ms. Hopperton.
Mr. Hudson also was a founder of the Grant County Saddle Club, a past president of the Grant County Fair Board, a former member of the Grant County Park Board, past member of the Grant County Extension Service Board and the Grant County Hospital Board, and a member of the Kentucky Sheriffs Association Board of Directors.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 27 years.
He was a deacon with Knoxville Baptist Church in Pendleton County, and a former deacon with Lawrenceville Baptist Church in Grant County.
He also was a former Air National Guard reservist, a native of Owen County, and a 1954 graduate of Williamstown High School.
