Lloyd Burden, soldier, volunteer, kids' champion

Lloyd Wesley Burden was a tireless volunteer, community activist and champion of children.

He was a nurseryman whose passion for conservation led him to donate countless trees to communities and scouting programs.

He was a 32nd degree Mason who, when he learned that the national Masonic cause was speech and hearing, drove to major speech and hearing programs sponsored by Masonic groups in Alabama and Virginia to learn more, and then literally knocked on the Covington Easter Seals door and said, "I'm here to help."

Mr. Burden, 73, of Walton, died Tuesday at Veterans Administration Hospital in Cincinnati.

Mr. Burden founded the Covington Scottish Rite Speech and Language Disorder Program at the Northern Kentucky Easter Seal Center, now called Cardinal Hill of Northern Kentucky Center for Rehabilitative Medicine. It provides free therapy for children, funded by the Scottish Rite.

While waiting for what seemed to be endless paperwork to set up the funding mechanism for the Masonic therapy program, Mr. Burden reached into his own pocket and personally funded a separate summer therapy program, which started in 1988 and continues today.

"He has personally given over $100,000 to the summer program, and he helped raise another $100,000," said Peg Baker Wernersbach, director of Cardinal Hill of Northern Kentucky.

He was a member of the Easter Seal board for six years and an honorary board member for another six years.

He was on the Licking Valley Girl Scout Council board, was a former Walton city councilman, a chaplain for the Crittenden Fire Department, former president of the Kentucky Arborists Association and a liaison between the national Scottish Rite and the Shriners Hospital in Lexington.

"He shook things up," Mrs. Wernersbach said. "When he was on a board, he wouldn't let people just sit there. He had ideas. He'd go out and ask people for money. He'd ask people for time."

His energy was all the more astounding because of a disability. He was a professional soldier with a wife and two children when he lost his left arm and left leg in an accident while defusing unexploded bombs in Germany in 1958. He spent 17 months in an Army hospital, and some say he never sat still again.

He ran his own nursery, Evergreen Enterprises, operating heavy equipment with two good arms - one metal.

Survivors include sons, Robert Franklin Burden of Gaithersburg, Md., and Steven Burden of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, Shirley Burden, Marilyn Hutchinson and Lela Schwartzentraub, all of Illinois; brothers, Arthur Burden, Carlisle Burden and Marvin Burden, all of Illinois; and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Dr. Leo Nutini, noted researcher

Dr. Leo G. Nutini was a gifted man.

A doctor, research scientist and scholar, he was the retired head of biology and experimental medicine at the old St. Thomas Institute in Cincinnati. There, he and his cousin, celebrated scientist Dr. George Sperti, spent their careers trying to find the cure for cancer.

"He was incredibly intelligent," said his daughter, Barbara Nutini of Fairhope, Ala.

"His memory was incredible. He was very clear. Up until a few days ago, he was reminding people when they were supposed to be taking their medication."

Dr. Nutini, 86, of Burlington, died Tuesday at his home.

A Covington native, he turned to medicine after his mother died at a young age. He earned his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati, then assisted the Royal Canadian Air Force with burn treatments during World War II. After the war, he joined Sperti at the institute. For more than 40 years, their work earned the institute praise in the medical community - especially for their work in cancer research.

There were successes. One particular cancer treatment in the 1950's showed promise, even reducing cancerous tumors, but was eventually abandoned because of the length of time for the treatment. Other, quicker, procedures were favored.

St. Thomas closed in 1988, and Dr. Nutini, then 74, retired.

Other survivors include a son, Tom Nutini of Burlington; a sister, Mary Nutini of Burlington; and five grandchildren. His wife, Blanche C. Nutini, died in 1992.

Sayers, completed 35 missions during WWII

Fort Mitchell resident Jack R. Sayers, a retired business forms salesman with Miami Systems in Cincinnati, knew he was lucky to enjoy each day.

Sayers, an Army Air Corps navigator during World War II, completed 35 missions over Europe. Most involved delivering men and material to the French underground, meaning secrecy was at a premium and danger was always near.

"He was always religious, but he always said that if you didn't have religion when you went over there, you sure had it when you came back," said his wife, Catherine Sayers. "They had so many brushes with death, it really affected them. He said it was prayer that brought him back."

Mr. Sayers, 82, died at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and Nocturnal Adoration at Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell, a member of Fort Mitchell Boosters Association and a grand knight with Father Bealer Council No. 3908 Knights of Columbus.

Years after the dangerous night missions over France, he still talked regularly with other "carpetbaggers" - the term for men on those missions.

"They are all like brothers, having gone through something like that together," Mrs. Sayers said.
