Barbara Ann Powers, taught bridge, served kids, church
Barbara Ann Powers had a special passion for bridge.
She was an avid player, and she taught beginners' bridge at Colonial Heights Retirement Community, Florence, and at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park.
"She belonged to a half- dozen bridge groups," said her son, Jackson D. Powers of Quito, Ecuador, who spent the past two years in Northern Kentucky helping care for his mother.
"She also loved other card games and board games. When the family got together, we knew we'd be playing games in the base ment after dinner."
Mrs. Powers, 80, of Crestview Hills, died Monday.
Mrs. Powers was a fund-raiser for the Covington Protestant Children's Home. In 1976, she organized the tennis team at Dixie Heights High School.
Mrs. Powers was active at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, where she was a past president of the Women of the Church group and taught Bible study classes. She was a mem ber of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Northern Kentucky CPA Wives.
Her husband, Rickman Powers, died in 1987.
"She was one of the most popular people I think I've ever known," said her son. "She had zillions of friends and kept in touch with her extended family all over the country.
"She felt she had been blessed and that she owed the community some return of her blessings. At Christmas time, she sent and received countless Christmas cards. She was very active and liked to participate in many community activities. She was vibrant, generous and happy. She really enjoyed life."
Other survivors include a daughter, Perrin Sue Ballenger of Knoxville, Tenn.; sons, Dr. Robert R. Powers of Nashville, Tenn., and Scott M. Powers of Crestview Hills; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Powers donated her body to the University of Kentucky. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 9 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Memorials are suggested to the church, 269 Dixie Highway, Lakeside Park, Ky. 41017.
Christine Jones Angell, 89, of Falmouth, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired restaurant cook, a member of Antioch Mills Christian Church in Harrison County and attended Falmouth Christian Church. She was a member of Blanket Creek Baptist Church Ladies Aid, the Antioch Homemakers Club and Pendleton County Senior Citizens. Her husbands, Roscoe Jones, Roy Cooper and Allie Angell; a daughter, Hilda Fay Lea; and a son, Gaylord Jones, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Birteena Browning of Dry Ridge and Velma Banfield of Sunrise; sons, Lewis Jones of Falmouth, Gerald Thomas Jones of Edgewood, Paul Edward Jones of Henneger of Alabama and Kenneth Ray Jones of Williamstown; a stepdaughter, Fern Rardin of Peach Grove; half-sisters, Hallie Hart and Wanda Taylor, both of Falmouth, and Vivian Smith of Shelbyville, Ind.; 16 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Thomas Glen Beagle, 62, of Bowling Green, died at 1:36 p.m. Monday at his home. He was a night auditor with Scottish Inn, Bowling Green, a member of Victory Baptist Church there and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Gregory Beagle; sons, Lloyd Allen Beagle of Lexington, Gary Wayne Beagle, Kenneth Beagle and Mark Beagle, all of Bowling Green; a daughter, Margaret Alicia Beagle of Bowling Green; his mother, Margaret Pulliam Beagle of Williamstown; brothers, Jerry Beagle of Williamstown, Audrey Beagle of Georgetown and Gary Lee Beagle of Covington; sisters, Sharon Wegford of Alexandria and Karen Beagle of Falmouth; and two granddaughters. Armando Joseph Bonnell, 56, of Newport, died Aug. 12 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired shipping clerk with U.S. Shoe Corp., a ham radio operator with the Ohkyin Club and an Army veteran. Survivors include sons, Dominick Bonella and Giuseppe Bonella, both of Cincinnati. Roy Cain, 56, of Independence, died Monday at his home. Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence.
Evelyn Miles Cason, 79, of Newport, died at 8:45 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired cosmetics saleswoman with Super X drug store, Covington, and a member of Pine Orchard Baptist Church in Oakdale, Tenn. She was a Women's Army Corps veteran.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Benton; sisters, Velma Loggins of San Diego, Jaunel Gilliam of Knoxville, Tenn., and Lee Murray of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and one grandchild. Margaret Ann Clemons Conley, 56, of Dry Ridge, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Steven Conley, Donnie Conley Jr., Duard Conley and Grant Conley, all of Dry Ridge; daughters, Melissa Mann of Crittenden, Allison Meece and Pamela Conley, both of Dry Ridge; brothers, John Clemons, David Clemons, Jimmy Clemons, Robert Clemons and Jenny Clemons; and sisters, Gloria Clemons, Doris Kerns, Ellen Clemons and Barbara Clemons. Louise LaVelle Kells, 74, of Covington, died at 6 a.m. Sunday at her son's home in Manhattan Beach, Calif. She was a retired data entry clerk with the Internal Revenue Service, Lexington, and a member of Rosedale Baptist Church, Latonia. She was a member of Rosebud Chapter No. 39 Order of the Eastern Star.

Barbara A. Pelzer Kremer, 63, of Highland heights, died Monday at her home. She was a retired office manager for Fifth Third Bank, Highland Heights.
Survivors include her husband, Wilfrid J. Kremer; daughters, Katherine Pennington of Fort Thomas and Susan Rice of Florence; sons, Thomas J. Kremer of Loveland, Ohio, and Michael J. Kremer of Highland Heights; her mother, Anna Pelzer Fehr of Fort Thomas; sisters, Harriet Biehl of Sun City, Ariz., and Miriam Kroger of Melbourne; brothers, Harry Pelzer of Glendale, Ariz., and Vaughn Pelzer of Mesa, Ariz.; and six grandchildren.

George Leduc "Lee" Kelsch, 41, of Foster, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was owner of Lee's Bestway Grocery, Brooksville, a member of St. Augustine Church, Augusta, and a former member of the parish council. He was a chairman of the Licking Valley Development Corporation of Maysville Community College and Breakfast With Santa program with Northern Elementary School in Falmouth.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Arlene Elrod Kelsch; daughters, Kelly Jo Kelsch, Jenna Leigh Kelsch and Natalie Faith Kelsch, all at home; a son, Kent Douglas Kelsch, at home; his mother, Mary Ellen Bach Kelsch of Foster; brothers, Vaughn Kelsch, Tony Kelsch and David Kelsch, all of Augusta; and sisters, Sarah Good and Mary Kelsch, both of Augusta, Becky Cline of Foster and Carla Behymer of Burlington.

William "Gary" G. Moore, 27, of Burlington, died Sunday at his home. He was a carpenter with Whitt Construction Co.

Ralph Eugene Vessing Sr., 69, of Demossville, died Sunday at his home. He was a retired truck driver with Budig Western Trucking Co., a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 100 in Cincinnati and a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. A daughter, Mary Elmore, died in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie Mae Vessing; a son, Ralph E. Vessing Jr. of Cincinnati; stepsons, Billy Duncan and Jimmy Duncan, both of Cincinnati, and Johnny Duncan of Walton; daughters, Jane Ann Gossett of Hardin and Jeana Mae Lehman of Erlanger; a stepdaughter, Deborah McGaha of Petersburg; his mother, Florence McMillian of Cincinnati; a sister, Minnie Ann Howard of Cincinnati; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Naomi Wiglesworth, 81, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at Edgemont Manor Nursing Home, Cynthiana.
