Raymond Schulker encouraged daughter

Raymond Schulker knew the value of an encouraging word. He offered many to his daughter, Sharon Fields, while she was growing up.

Born with a sight impairment that left her legally blind, Ms. Fields said she doesn't know where she would be today without the support of her father.

"He taught me independence and to rely upon myself," said Ms. Fields, who lives in Frankfort.

Mr. Schulker, 86, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died at 9 p.m. Thursday at his residence in Frankfort .

Ms. Fields said her father and her mother, Thelma Hendricks Schulker, gave her the encouragement she needed to succeed in school and life.

Mr. Schulker and his wife were married for 59 years. She died in 1994.

"My parents were my eyes during my elementary and secondary education. They read everything to me," Ms. Fields said.

Mr. Schulker's hard work and encouragement helped Ms. Fields achieve a master's degree in education rehabilitation counseling from the University of Kentucky. Today she works as the executive director for the Kentucky Disabilities Coalition.

Ms. Fields said she remembers her father as a man who loved to joke around.

"He was always seeing humor in things and telling funny stories," she said.

Mr. Schulker was a retired farmer and retired independent contractor for Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. He was a member of Truth Mission Baptist Church, Frankfort, and of Crittenden Lodge 694, F&AM, Grant County; Hiram Lodge 4, F&AM, Frankfort; the Scottish Rite, Valley of Covington; Hiram Chapter 93, Order of Eastern Star; and the Franklin County Senior Citizens.

Other survivors include a niece, a nephew; two great nieces, two great nephews, eight great-great nieces and three great-great nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at LeCompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral Home, Frankfort, with Eastern Star services at 7:30 p.m., and from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m.

Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass, Franklin County, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, Ky. 40601; to Truth Mission Baptist Church, 1126 U.S. 127 South, Frankfort, Ky. 40601; or to Crittenden Lodge 694, F&AM, c/o Robert McDaniel, 3550 Dixie Highway, Dry Ridge, Ky. 41035.

Tammy Renee Burton, 32, of Erlanger, died Thursday at her residence. She was an assembler at New Perceptions in Edgewood.

Survivors include foster parents, Rick and April Chessman of Erlanger; a sister, Cheryl Barnes of Cincinnati; brothers, Billey Burton, hometown unavailable, Keith Burton of Cincinnati, Kenneth Burton of San Jose, Calif., Michael Burton of Florence, and Darrell Burton, Gary Burton and Kevin Burton, all of Covington.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lakeside Park. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Dorothy C. Flesch, 84, of Latonia, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice, Covington. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell.

Survivors include a brother, Ralph Flesch of Florence; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Church. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Rosedale Manor, 5250 Glenn Ave., Covington, Ky. 41015, or the Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Ennis J. Haydon, 72, of Monterey, died Friday at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. He was a retired security guard for the state of Kentucky and a former Owen County sheriff, a member of Monterey Baptist Church and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Viola Atha Haydon; a son, Bradley Haydon of Monterey; daughters, Terry Murphy of Frankfort and Stacy Ball of Wheatley.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Monterey Masonic Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, Ky. 40601.

George A. King, 85, of Alexandria, died Thursday at his residence. He was a retired superintendent at Early & Daniel Feed Co. and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

His wife, Beatrice King, preceded him in death. Survivors include sons, Cameron King of Florence, Dennis King of Cincinnati, Jerry King of Fremont, Calif., David King of Virginia and Kipert King of California, Ky.; a daughter, Deanna King of Florida; sisters, Louise Dunbar and Florence Dunbar, both of Bloomington, Ill.; 17 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

R.C. "Bill" Lawson, 68, of Gallatin County, died Friday at his residence. He was a retired farmer and a member of Scenic View Church of Christ, Gallatin County.

Survivors include his wife Opal Lee Fugate Lawson; three sons, Glenn Lawson of Warsaw and Jack Lawson and Brian Lawson, both of Verona; two brothers, Walter Lawson and Willard Lawson, both of Verona; sisters, Betty Smith of Crittenden, Virgie Story of Lexington and Eunice Brewer of Campton; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Napolean Cemetery, Napolean. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.

Clifford B. McCreary . 83, of Worthville, died Thursday at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. He was the former mayor of Worthville and former member of the Carroll County Board of Education; a retired farmer and employee of the Brite-Lite Tobacco Warehouses in Carrollton; and a member of the Dean Memorial United Methodist Church, Worthville, where he was a former chairman of the board of trustees.

His wife, Elizabeth Supplee McCreary, died in 1970. Survivors include daughters, Sue Towles and Carol Duvall, both of Worthville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Dean Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

LeRoy Porter Sr., 83, of Maysville, died at 7:12 a.m. Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center. He was a retired farmer and a member of Second Baptist Church, May's Lick.

Survivors include his wife, Addie Ellen White Porter; daughters, Anna Lee Robinson of Indianapolis and Carole Mae Bolden of Wichita, Kan.; a son, Allen LeRoy Porter Jr. of Indianapolis; a sister, Naomi Williams of Columbus, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Second Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home, May's Lick. Burial will be in May's Lick Cemetery.

Thelma Edmondson Perkins, 83, of Burlington, died Wednesday at her home. She was an employee of Equitable Bag Co., Boone County.

Two husbands, Harold Edmondson and Harry Perkins, and a daughter, Geneva Hughes, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, James Edmondson of Glencoe; daughters, Jean Roberts of Burlington, Jeanetta Graven of Elsmere and Mae Brock of Sparta; a sister, Stella Hughes of Cincinnati; 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Bessie Lorraine Reese, 67, of Florence, died Wednesday at her residence. She was a retired restaurant manager for White Castle.

Survivors include brothers, Randel Manis of Birdstown, Tenn., and Gary Flowers of Rising Sun, Ind.; sisters, Charlotte Glee Holman and Barbara Smithers, both of Birdstown, Tenn., and Carolyn Martin of Brentwood, Tenn.

Services are private. A private burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Rising Sun, Ind. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Stephen R. Schroder, 10, of Fort Thomas, died at 7:02 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas of injuries suffered in an accident.

He was a fifth-grader at Woodfill Elementary School in Fort Thomas and a member of the Bad Boys team in the Northern Kentucky Soccer League.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Kimberly Schroder-Jackson and Brady Jackson of Fort Thomas; his father and stepmother, Larry Schroder and Cecy Arriola of Madisonville; sisters, Ryanne and Ashley Schroder, both of Fort Thomas; brothers, Michael Schroder and B. J. Jackson, both of Fort Thomas; grandparents, Juanita "Judy" Schroder of Fort Thomas, Billie and Bob Walters of Bellevue, Wayne and Rita Burnett of Cincinnati and Bernard and Bessie Jackson of Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Louis C. Simpson, 90, of Owenton, died Friday at Owen County Memorial Hospital. He was a retired vehicle inspector for General Motors Corp., Cincinnati, and a member of Owenton First Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge 128, F&AM.

Survivors include his wife, Stella Goldsberry Simpson; foster daughter, Churchil Gioliani of Cincinnati; stepson, Gary Bishop of Independence; stepdaughters, Beverly Smoot of Frankfort and Nancy Jo Thompson of Louisville; brother, Omer Simpson of Hartford, Ala.; sisters, Geneva Reffitt of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Lois Epperson of Florence; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at McDonald Funeral Homes, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Owenton IOOF Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Owenton First Baptist Church, 213 N. Main St., Owenton, Ky. 40359.
