GM exec, athlete Richard Hehman, taught, coached at St. Thomas
Richard D. Hehman, a former teacher and coach at now-closed St. Thomas High School in Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis. He was 63.
He was born in Fort Thomas and lived in Southgate before moving to Illinois in 1967 and then to Indianapolis in 1969. He was a retired executive for General Motors.
Mr. Hehman was an avid sportsman and a member of Newport Catholic High School's state championship baseball team in 1954. He attended Villa Madonna College on a basketball scholarship and graduated in 1958, then earned his MBA from Xavier University.
He managed Fort Thomas Swim Club and was a math teacher and basketball coach at St. Thomas in the 1960s. The high school closed in the 1970s.
His son, Rick Hehman of Indianapolis, recalls sitting on the bench with his dad at St. Thomas and going to the swim club each morning in the summer, helping his dad clean the filters. "He included us in everything he did," Rick Hehman said. "We were always really close as a family."
Richard Hehman was the center of any gathering.
"He was the emcee," his son said. "He had a knack with words and loved to write funny poems to go with gifts. He was the first to plan the volleyball games and softball games. He got everybody involved."
In Indianapolis, he was active on the parish council at St. Pius X Church and financial secretary of the Knights of Columbus.
Rick Hehman said his father taught him how to have fun, how to care about other people and how to be brave. When Mr. Hehman was diagnosed with cancer five years ago, he volunteered for experimental studies to test drug treatments. It wasn't always comfortable, his son said.
"He always said 'I'm hoping they'll learn something and they might be able to extend someone else's life.' "
