Mildred Hoffman, 87, was grocery owner in Newport
Mildred Martha Hoffman is remembered by her family as a tiny lady with a big heart.
"She was a fun person, but she wasn't one to put herself out front," said a son, Donald J. Hoffman of Florence.
"She was real loveable. And she was very kind. She never could find negative points about anyone."
Mrs. Hoffman, 87, former owner of Ray and Polly's Grocery in Newport, died at 10:20 a.m. Friday at her home in Fort Thomas.
Her son said the greatest lessons he learned from his mother were strength and compassion.
She was a homemaker while her children were young, and later worked at Ray and Polly's grocery at the corner of Parkview Avenue and Main Street. When the owners wanted to retire in the late 1950s, Mrs. Hoffman and her husband bought the store.
"It was going to be something for their retirement," her son said.
Mrs. Hoffman was in her 40s. Three years later, her husband, Robert F. Hoffman, died of a heart attack, and the store became her lifeline to care for the children.
"She had a lot of 12- and 14-hour days," her son said. "We lived behind the store so she could be there all the time."
Mrs. Hoffman also was active in St. Vincent DePaul Church, Newport.
Her daughter, Connie Hoffman, is a teacher, and Mrs. Hoffman enjoyed crocheting Christmas gifts for her daughter's students.
Mrs. Hoffman and her daughter moved to Fort Thomas in the late 1970s, and Mrs. Hoffman retired about 1978.
