D.J. Lancaster, artist, author, home-schooling advocate
D.J. Lancaster knew the value of a good education. Her husband, Tim Lancaster of Kenton Vale, said their family's life centered around education.
"We would learn things together. We made education our way of life," he said.
Mrs. Lancaster, 53, of Kenton Vale, died Wednesday at her home of pancreatic cancer.
A proponent of home-schooling, Mrs. Lancaster spent the majority of her life supporting home-schooling at a time when it was frowned upon by officials. She wrote many essays and books on the benefits of home-schooling. Her husband said many of her writings were used at teaching symposiums as guides for other teachers.
"She was very brilliant," he said.
All three of their children were taught at home by Mrs. Lancaster. They all currently attend Northern Kentucky University.
Her teaching abilities attracted the attention of former first lady Barbara Bush, who once made derogatory comments about home-schooling. Mrs. Bush sent Mrs. Lancaster's children handwritten letters.
"She wrote and said she was glad they were getting a good education and that she would rethink her position," Lancaster said.
Mrs. Lancaster and her husband were married
for 24 years. They met at an art show in Covington. Mrs. Lancaster did oil paintings and was a member of the Attic Gallery in Newport.
