Latonia's William J. Pahls, devoted husband
William J. Pahls' family knew that behind the disciplinarian who taught them the value of hard work and dedication, there was someone who loved to laugh.
"I don't think I would have continued my education without his encouragement," said his nephew, Roy Bitter. "He used to tell me in a joking way, 'You don't have the gumption to finish because you keep messing with those girls.' "
Mr. Pahls, 85, of Latonia, died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. He was a retired stationary engineer with the Terrace Hilton, Cincinnati, and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. He was a member of the 50 Plus Club and American Legion Post No. 203 in Latonia, and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Family members say Pahls, who was married
for 58 years to his wife, Rose, was a quiet man who loved watching the Cincinnati Reds on television and squeezing in a game at the local bowling alley.
Bitter, who was partially raised by Pahls, said his uncle had the perfect mix of discipline and kindness.
"When he spoke, you listened." Bitter said, "And when he barked, you jumped."
