Wilma Frishe, pioneering professional photographer
Wilma C. Frishe, who photographed bishops, nightclub stars and school girls as one of Northern Kentucky's longtime professional photographers, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North.
She was 76.
Mrs. Frishe started her career in 1944 at the Pat Brand Studio in Cincinnati and opened her own studio in 1946.
Her clients included singers and entertainers from the heyday of the Beverly Hills Supper Club, as well as local performers.
She took the school photos for LaSalette Academy and photographed weddings, said her husband, James Frishe of Covington. But she was best known for her portraits and theatrical work.
"She was very picky. It had to be just so or it went in the wastebasket," said her husband.
"She took a lot of entertainers. And she wasn't very easy on them. She would put them in poses and worked with the light. She wanted the results and that's what she got."
He met her when he went to her studio to have his photo taken for a Masonic event. They talked about difficulties of running the business end of the studio, and he offered to help.
Her studio, Camera Creations by Wilma Frishe, was on East Seventh Street. She and her husband lived upstairs.
She was president of the Professional Photographers Association of Greater Cincinnati in 1959, a member of the Professional Photographers Association of Kentucky, and president of the Zonta Club of Cincinnati in 1969-70.
She was listed in the World Who's Who of Women.
She closed the studio in 1979, when her eyesight started changing and took a job selling coffee to offices.
"She was great," her husband said. "She had a way with people. She could go out to no man's land and come back with business."
She had a severe stroke about five years ago and her health deteriorated. She had another stroke on Sunday.
Besides her husband, she leaves a brother, Kenneth Jones of St. Petersburg, Fla.
Her body was donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. At her request, there will be no services. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Swindler & Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is in charge of arrangements.
