Dorothy Fitterer lived golden rule
Dorothy Fitterer lived her life by the golden rule.
"She would literally give you the shirt off her back," said a son, Timothy Fitterer of Newport.
Mrs. Fitterer, 72, of Newport, died Tuesday at her home.
"She would help anyone," Fitterer said. She had four children of her own but provided motherly care to many others. When Fitterer was in school he befriended a boy from a poor family. Mrs. Fitterer saw to it that the boy never went hungry.
"She would tell me to bring him home every day for lunch," he said.
Fitterer also remembers donating toys and clothing to children from low income families. He said his mother would make his brothers and sisters go through their toys each year and give some of them away.
Her humanitarian efforts extended beyond feeding children. She made sure they were safe. Mrs. Fitterer was a former parent teacher association president and safety chairperson in Newport. She worked to get crosswalks installed by the A.D. Owens Elementary School in the '70s.
Mrs. Fitterer also was a volunteer for the Campbell County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Her son said she loved animals and had three dogs and three cats.
"They were her buddies," he said.
Her husband, Joseph Albert Fitterer, died of cancer in 1978. The couple was married
26 years. Her son said his mother never dated another man after the death of her husband.
"She told me if Joe wasn't around she didn't want anybody else," he said.
Fitterer said he visited his mother everyday.
"To me, it is like my best friend has gone away," he said.
"She was a tremendous lady."
