Eddie Cox, close to family, friends
The first time Patty Cox saw her husband she knew he was the one.
"It was kind of like I saw him and he saw me," said Mrs. Cox of Claryville. "I guess it was fate."
Mrs. Cox met her husband, Eddie Cox, at a roller skating rink in Alexandria. She was 14, and he was 17. The two dated for four years and then married. They were married
for 24 years.
Eddie "Hippie" Cox, 47, of Claryville, died from a brain aneurysm Friday at University of Cincinnati Hospital.
"I don't remember life without him," Mrs. Cox said.
He and his wife had one son, Jeremy, of Claryville.
Mrs. Cox said her husband often projected a "tough guy" image. In reality, he was the opposite, especially with his son. Mrs. Cox said her husband and son were extremely close. The two often went to tractor pulls together.
Recently, they had been building a 1972 Chevelle drag car that they had planned on racing.
"I have never seen a father and son so close," she said. "They were best friends."
Mr. Cox also was a friend to his son's friends. Mrs. Cox said she couldn't count the times her husband helped out his son's friends by fixing or towing their cars.
Friends and co-workers affectionately called Mr. Cox "Hippie." Mrs. Cox said he picked up the nickname when he was a teen-ager because he had long, dark hair.
Growing up, his parents wouldn't let him have long hair so he grew it out to rebel against them. He cut his hair, and had kept it short for a number of years. But this past winter he started growing it out again, she said.
Mr. Cox worked as a truck driver for Bray Trucking.
