William Hay, builder, was 'wonderful dancer'
William L. Hay built a few houses before World War II. Then after the war his business, the W.L. Hay Co., took off.
After the war, he started developing streets and entire neighborhoods, said his wife, Vivian Gleeson Hay.
He passed the operation, now known simply as the Hay Co., down to his son, Gary S. Hay of Covington, several years ago.
The elder Mr. Hay, 87, of Fort Thomas, died at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
He will be remembered as a man who loved his grandchildren, said Mrs. Hay.
"They went to parades, and we always took them to the park," said Mrs. Hay.
Mr. Hay also loved laughter, music and dancing.
"He was a wonderful dancer," Mrs. Hay said. "And he loved music; he had all kinds of records .... He loved Lawrence Welk."
The Hays often went dancing at places like Coney Island, Mrs. Hay said.
In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Hay is survived by a daughter, Janet Fassler of Fort Thomas; sisters Marcella Avery of Cincinnati, Virginia Schiller and Mary Haunert, both of Fort Thomas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Saturday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Memorials are suggested to Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
Carrie F. Racke Beck, 84, of Alexandria, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Arnold H. Beck, died in 1998.
Survivors include daughters, Diana Mote and Margaret Perry, both of Alexandria; a sister, Louise Metheringham of Newport; a brother, William Racke of Alexandria; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul United Church of Christ, Main and Jefferson, Alexandria, Ky. 41001.
Elaine Breuer, 70, of Florence, died at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday at Woodspoint Care Center in Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Eugene W. Brown, 67, of Elsmere, died at 10:10 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired meat and alcohol salesman, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and an Army veteran of the Korean War. A son, Daniel W. Brown, died in 1998.
Survivors include his wife, Millie Brearton Brown; sons, Richard Brown of Owensboro and Thomas Brown of Park Hills; a daughter, Julie Griner of Guyton, Ga.; a sister, Rosemarie Roberts of Fort Mitchell; three granddaughters and one great-grandson.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mother of God Mausoleum Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Entombment will be in Mother of God Mausoleum. Amelia Jane Day, 12 weeks, daughter of Kevin and Mary Jane Day of Edgewood, died Wednesday at her home.
Other survivors include brothers, Mitchell Day and Bryce Day, both at home; and grandparents, Jim and Sue Day of Cincinnati and Ben and Virginia Bernales of Cincinnati.

Beatrice Creekbaum Feix, 83, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. She was a retired employee of Harrison Deposit Bank and Owsley Lumber Co., and was a member of Cynthiana Christian Church. Her husband, George Feix, preceded her in death.
Survivors include stepsons, Paul Madison Feix of Waco, Texas, and Darl Wade Feix of Cynthiana; stepdaughters, Jane Stump of Lexington, Patsy Conover of Milton, and Donna Kay Bailey and Carole Frankel, both of Norco, Calif.; a sister, Helen Wendling of Newport; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Edward Cemetery, Cynthiana.
Henry Grant Foley, 58, of Newark, Del., formerly of Mason County, died Tuesday at his home. He was a plant manager with Duport Chemical in Camden, N.J., and a member of Haven's Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta Greene Foley; daughters, Lisa Foley of Winslow, N.J., Lynn Ann Foley of Camden, Leightara Evans of Bettsville, Md.; sons, James Grant Foley of Houston, Kyle Grant Foley of Philadelphia, Jessie Foley and Jerad Foley, both of Pennsylvania; stepchildren, Artis Greene, Heaven Green and Kim Morton, all of Lexington; a brother, James O. Foley of Woodbridge, Va.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mays Lick Cemetery.
Gayle Chilton Hartman, 78, of Worthville, died Wednesday at Green Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center, Carrollton. He was a member of Worthville Baptist Church and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Turner Hartman; daughters, Barbara Godman of Carrollton, Lavern Kelley of Madison, Ind., and Kathy Mefford of Worthville; a sister, Wand L. Wilson of Huber Heights, Ohio; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight and after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Worthville Cemetery.
Oda Fay Hensley, 77, of Florence, died at 4:08 a.m. Wednesday at Gallatin County Health Care Center, Warsaw. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William T. Hensley, died in 1981.
Survivors include sons, William T. Hensley Jr. of Las Vegas and Richard E. Hensley of Florence; a sister, Alma Jean Cox of Cox's Creek; one granddaughter and one great-grandson.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at New Zion Cemetery, McKee. Memorials are suggested to the Children's Miracle Network. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Kenneth H. Lemberg, 78, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., died at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Myrtle Beach. He was a postal worker with the U.S. Postal Service, Cincinnati, and a member of First baptist Church, Newport. He was a deacon and teacher at the church, and worked in missions in the west end of Newport. He also helped organize Calvary Baptist Church, Newport.
Mr. Lemberg was a member and officer of the Myrtle Beach Lions Club and the Full Gospel Businessmen's Association, and was active in the Christian Fellowship Church Ministry in South Carolina. He was an Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Della Mae Fugate Lemberg; a daughter, Beverly Seibert of Myrtle Beach; a sister, Beverly Ward of Newport; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Charity May Locke, daughter of Matthew and Suzanne Locke of Alexandria, was stillborn at 6:10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Other survivors include a sister, Katie Locke, at home; grandparents, Kathy and Chris Wall of Clarksville, Tenn., Helen Williams of Clarksville, and David and Mary Locke of Alexandria; and great-grandparents, Charles and Sandra Hinton of Clarksville, J. T. and Gertrude Williams of Clarksville, and Abe and Margaret Turner of Breathitt County.

Walter Mistishin, 70, of Dover, died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. He was retired from Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co., and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a former Boy Scout leader, a former soccer coach and a member of the American Legion. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. His first wife, Jeanne Mistishin, and a daughter, Sharon Mistishin, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Lena Manley Mistishin; sons, David Mistishin of Cincinnati and Walter Andrew Mistishin of Fairborn, Ohio; a stepson, Larry Aldridge of Aberdeen, Ohio; a daughter, Peggy Bishop of Loveland, Ohio; stepdaughters, Martha Aldridge and Peggy Brooks, both of Lexington; a sister, Helen Georgeff of Philadelphia; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Knox and Brothers Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Butler County Memorial Park Cemetery, Trenton, Ohio.
Katie Jean Poindexter, 77, of Covington, died at midnight Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. She was an owner of Jean's Grocery, Covington, and a member of the John G. Carlisle School PTA in Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Earl Poindexter Sr.; a son, Earl Poindexter Jr. of Covington; a daughter, Deanna Ashcraft of Covington; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Cannon Sowder, 82, of Williamstown, died Wednesday at his home.
