Phil Short, 'consummate journalist'
As a newspaper reporter and editor, Edgar "Phil" Short had a reverence for the truth and believed that as a journalist he held a public trust.
"He was the consummate journalist," said his daughter, Shirl Short of Erlanger, a former Editorial Page editor of The Kentucky Post.
"He was very particular about getting the facts," Ms. Short said. "He was a very good mentor to other people. He was very patient."
Mr. Short, 79, died at 5:10 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
Mr. Short moved to Erlanger with his wife, Eunice, about six years ago.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 203 in Latonia and a member of New Thought Unity Center in Cincinnati.
His professional career was centered in Bridgewater, N.J., where he moved from reporter to assistant suburban editor, assistant city editor and makeup editor at the Courier News.
He retired in 1982 after 23 years.
Mr. Short had a quick wit and an exuberant sense of humor that he used to rally his troops through hectic deadlines. At home, he brought an enthusiasm to everything he did.
He enjoyed sports and big-band music, old movies and discussing the latest issues.
As a teen-ager, he wanted to be a reporter so badly that he did gardening for the editor of his hometown paper in Huntingdon, Pa., in exchange for the chance to write stories.
"And he hated gardening," Ms. Short said.
His family sent him to trade school to become a tinsmith, but he ended up in the school's public-relations department writing press re leases. In the late 1940s and 1950s he covered sports in newspapers and on radio before moving to New Jersey and the news desk of the Courier News.
Mr. Short was an Army veteran.
His wife died in 1997. Mr. Short had suffered from heart problems in recent months, and he moved to his daughter's house. There are no other immediate survivors.
