Thomas Dearing, 46, manager

In a family of 11 children, it might be easy to go unnoticed, but not for Thomas Dearing.

As the second-oldest child, Mr. Dearing quickly became the family's leader, guiding his siblings through good times and bad.

But he could not prepare them for his death in an auto accident Friday at the age of 46.

"He was our rock," said his mother, Edwina Turner Adams of Crittenden. "He watched over them all."

Mr. Dearing, general sales manager at Toyota Towne in Florence, was returning from a family vacation in Florida Friday, when the accident occurred near Richmond on Interstate 75. Another car on the highway blew a tire and hit Mr. Dearing's vehicle, causing it to roll and careen off the highway.

Mr. Dearing, of Dry Ridge, was dead at the scene. His wife, daughter and another girl traveling in the car were taken to University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Mr. Dearing's wife and daughter were released after treatment this weekend.

According to hospital records, another passenger taken to the hospital after the wreck remained in critical but stable condition today. Authorities did not release the name of the injured person.

Mr. Dearing was born in Maysville but grew up in Covington. He attended Bishop Brossart and Newport Catholic High School.

Mrs. Adams said her son was a natural salesman who always had a smile and never met a stranger. Mr. Dearing quickly rose through the ranks at Toyota Towne, where he worked for 25 years.

Mr. Dearing and his wife of 18 years, Linda Bowman Dearing, combined families to have seven children together and seven grandchildren.
