Charlie Watkins, cab driver, devoted husband, father
Charlie Watkins met many eccentric customers as a cab driver.
"Sometimes he would meet nice people, and sometimes he would meet really weird people. He just never knew," said his daughter, Marline Ward. "Occasionally he would even tell us that he picked up a celebrity. He always had lots of stories."
Mr. Watkins, 75, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, in Edgewood. He retired from cab driving in the early '70s because of health reasons.
"He was a good father and a great provider," Mrs. Ward said.
Mr. Watkins met his wife of 55 years, Neola, in Hazard Ky., where he worked in the local coal mines. When they relocated to the area, both took jobs at Yellow Cab in Newport and Covington, where Mrs. Watkins worked as a dispatcher.
Mr. Watkins also worked for cab services in Cincinnati and other surrounding areas.
"He worked all over the city for lots of different cab companies," said Mrs. Ward. "He just really enjoyed meeting different people."
Other survivors include sons, John Watkins of Alexandria and Charles Watkins of Taylor Mill; daughters, Hurshlene Pollitt of Augusta, Hendalee Doane of Covington, Elizabeth Powers of Park Hills, Darlane Ward of Richmond, Marie Ward of Independence and Angela Watters of Latonia; 37 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Agnes L. Basting, 86, of Covington, died Friday at her home. She was a private secretary to the president of Hamilton-Tayloring Co., Cincinnati. Her husband, Peter Basting, died in 1968. A son, James Reeves, died in 1955.
Survivors include a daughter, Jane Daniel of Erlanger; a brother, Stanley Northcutt of Cincinnati; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
Randle H. Bettis, 75, of Florence, died Monday at Veterans Hospital in Cincinnati.
Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.
Donald C. Boone, 66, of Florence, died at 3:30 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired switchman with CSX Railroad and a member of Colonel Clay Lodge No. 159 F&AM, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Boone; sons, Greg Walker of Independence and Dave Boone of Erlanger; daughters, Michelle Workman of Edgewood and Nancy Rapp of Florence; a sister, Sarah of Erlanger; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. today at Erlanger Baptist Church. Mr. Boone bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
John Wallace Dunning, 60, of St. Peters, Mo., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Saturday in St. Peters. He was a deacon, formerly with the Dio cese of Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne M. Whiteman Dunning; sons, Thomas J. Dunning of Kansas City, Mo., Michael J. Dunning of St. Peters, Marc W. Dunning of St. Louis, Paul A. Dunning of St. Charles, Mo., William C. Dunning of Glen Carbon, Ill.; foster children, Moi Chi Bui of Santa Marguerita, Calif., and Van Pham and Co Pham, both of Grand Rapids, Mich.; his mother, Rose I. Dunning of Minneapolis; and four grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church, Dardenne, Mo. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Dardenne. Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. John C. Engelkamp, 82, of Covington, died at 5:45 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was an electrical engineer with General Electric and the H. Yoh Inc. engineering company, and a member of the American Association of Electrical Engineers.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Wednesday at St. Benedict Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Benedict Church, 338 E. 17th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Lawrence W. Farmer, 81, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired machinist with Ruthman Machine Co. in Cincinnati, and a member of Disabled American Veterans' Campbell County Chapter and the Latonia Gun Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a former prisoner of war.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth A. DeMoss Farmer; and a daughter, Laurie Farmer Allen of Moores Hill, Ind.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.
Juanita Laney, 85, of Florence, died at 4:45 a.m. Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Lakeside Christian Church in Lakeside Park. Her husband, Ebert Laney, died in 1995.
Survivors include daughters, Donna Fields of Cincinnati, Diane Crutcher of Louisville, Linda Fox of Crittenden and Patty Laake of Erlanger; brothers, James Eubanks of Latonia and Ray Eubanks of Covington; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Frances Mary Lemmons, 85, of Latonia, died at 1:52 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Lemmons; a daughter, Maureen Dunn of Indianapolis; a son, Thomas Lemmons of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Helen McGrath of Fort Wright and Irene McAndrews of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mabel E. Mabes, 88, of Covington, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Sue Ellen Oaks, 44, of Alexandria, died Friday at her home. She was an employee of the Internal Revenue Service and a member of First Baptist Church of Cold Spring.
Survivors include her husband, Steve Oaks; a daughter, Michelle Huegel of Cincinnati; brothers, Robert Wesselman of St. Petersburg, Fla., George Wesselman of Taylor Mill and Michael Wesselman of Germany; sisters, Martha Hassert and Paula Work, both of Latonia, and Dee Hartfiel of Dry Ridge; and four grandchildren.
Services were Monday at Tufts Schildmeyer Family Funeral Home, Goshen, Ohio. Burial was in Graceland Memorial Gardens, Milford, Ohio.
Frances C. Christen Ponzer, 94, of Fort Mitchell, died Monday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a homemaker and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Her husband, Joseph Ponzer, died in 1979.
Survivors include a son, Victor Ponzer of Independence; sisters, Albertine Parr of Alexandria and Jenny Christen of Batavia, Ohio; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Ruth M. Rauen, 85, of Taylor Mill, died at 9:50 a.m. Saturday at Woodland Hills Care Center, Lawrenceburg, Ind. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Her husband, Frederick J. Rauen Sr., died in 1980.
Survivors include sons, David F. Rauen of Rochester, N.Y., and Fred J. Rauen Jr. of Taylor Mill; a daughter, Nancy Barnett of Burlington; a brother, John Taphorn of Cincinnati; a sister, Anna Marie Franklin of Dayton; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Robert Rigler, 76, of Florence, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

Lloyd Rogers, 90, of Cynthiana, died Monday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. He was a retired lawyer and a former commissioner of finance for the city of Cynthiana. He was a state representative in 1954. His legislative committee assignments included judiciary and judicial council and cities of the sixth class. He also was the founder of Cynthiana Lions Club Youth Day, and was a Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award winner as an outstanding contributor to scouting.
Mr. Rogers was active in the state Democratic Party and a member of Cynthiana Presbyterian Church. His wife, Frances Phelps Rogers, and a son, Emmett Vinson Rogers, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, C. W. C. "Bill" Rogers of Clarence Center, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Marion Floyd "Pete" Wills, 71, of Dry Ridge, formerly of Alexandria, died Monday at his home. He was retired from the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Wills in 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie Mae Smith Wills; son, David Ray Wills of Alexandria; daughters, Mary Ann Reed of Alexandria, Vonnie Hardy of Hebron, Julie Ruf of Cold Spring and Nancy Wills of Melbourne; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Russellville Cemetery, Russellville, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
