Victor H. Brown founded florist shop in 1928
Victor H. Brown, a former member of the Newport Board of Education, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
Mr. Brown, 92, of Fort Thomas, was a member of the education board from 1951-60. He also owned Victor H. Brown & Son Florist, which he founded in Newport in 1928.
The business was relocated to Highland Heights about 14 years ago and now is being run by Mr. Brown's son, Victor J. Brown of Cold Spring.
Mr. Brown was a hard-working man who put his customers first, his son said.
"He devoted his whole life to the business," Victor J. Brown said.
Mr. Brown cared about children and a variety of civic ventures, his son said.
"He was pretty outspoken," Victor J. Brown said. "And he was healthy his whole life, until recently."
Mr. Brown was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Newport, where he once served as vice-president of the church council.
He also was the first president of the St. John's Life Partners and was a volunteer with Brighton Street.
He was a member of the Recreation Commission for Newport, and was a past president of the Newport Optimist Club and Highland Country Club.
He also was a member of Robert Barnes Masonic Lodge in Newport, Covington Scottish Rite and the Shriners Syrian Temple.
Other survivors include his wife, Alma Brown of Fort Thomas; a daughter, Bonnie Huber of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Willie Claxon Hawkins, 95, of Frankfort, died at 8:05 p.m. Monday at Bradford Square Nursing Home, Frankfort. He was a retired employee of the Department of Human Resources and a member of Lockport Methodist Church, Henry County. Her husband, Lawrence Hawkins; sons, Kenneth Hawkins and Larry Hawkins; and a daughter, Billie Klein, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Jewell Hawkins and Rollie Hawkins, both of Frankfort; daughters, Mary Kathryn Swanson of Winter Haven, Fla., Myrene Hancock of Lexington, Joy Bobzien of Louisville and Jacqulyn Sanders of Punta Gorda, Fla.; a brother, Lawrence Claxon of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Mary Alice Hall of Eminence; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, Owenton. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Squiresville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Lockport Methodist Church, Lockport, Ky. 40359.
Ramona Judy Holmes, 61, of Burlington, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Her husband, Harry Holmes, died in 1994.
Survivors include a daughter, Kristi Chitwood of Union; sons, Brad Holmes of Burlington, David Holmes of Val Rico, Fla., and Gordon Holmes of Independence; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Richard "Red" Jacobs, 82, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County in Williamstown. He was a retired assistant foreman for the Kentucky Department of Highways and a farmer. He served two terms as a Grant County magistrate and was a member of Lawrenceville Baptist Church, Grant County. His wife, Wilma Mae Crosswaite Jacobs, died in 1972.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Kate Brock of Williamstown; a son, Jasper Jacobs of Jonesville; a brother, J.R. Jacobs of Liberty, Ind.; sisters, Mary Ruth Lloyd of Liberty, Ind., Betty Plank of Cincinnati and Laverne Derham of Louisville; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Holbrook Cemetery, Grant County.
Mabel E. Moore Mabes, 88, of Latonia, died at 9:05 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Lonnie Minor of Denver; daughters, Eunice Sposato of Vineland, N.J., Mamie Mardis of Ryland Heights and Brenda Rex of Shippenville, Pa.; a brother, Carl Moore of Covington; a sister, Gladys Cobb of Covington; and 13 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Warsaw Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Rosedale Manor, 4250 Glenn Ave., Covington, Ky. 41015. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, is handling arrangements.
Ruth Newman, 69, of Florence, died at 7:20 p.m. Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Church of the Living God, Beattyville. Her husband, Thomas Newman, died in 1994.
Survivors include daughter, Betty Powers of Independence, Sandy Wollum of Florence and Pat Perkins of Taylor Mill; sisters, Ada Francen of Atlanta, Rosalee Cole of Beattyville, Wilma Lofton of Evansville, Ind., Pauline Dyer of Nashville, Tenn.; brothers, James Charles of Atlanta, Gentry Charles of Cincinnati, Douglas Charles of Mount Sterling, John Charles of Irvine, Ronnie Charles of Beattyville; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Burial was in Independence Cemetery.
Don Nusbaum, 76, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Joseph E. O'Rourke, 79, of Maysville, died at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. He was a farmer and a member of St. Patrick Church, Maysville.
Survivors include a sister, Margaret Gallenstein of Maysville; nieces and nephews.

Robert B. Riegler, 76, of Florence, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a junior executive with Western and Southern Life Insurance Co., a member of St. Paul Church in Florence, and a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Riegler; sons, Randy Riegler of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ron Riegler of Florence; a daughter, Terri Riegler of Florence; a brother, Roy A. Riegler Sr. of Cincinnati; a sister, Dorothy Hils of Fort Thomas; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Church. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Granville B. Sayre, 70, of Cynthiana, died Monday at Edgemont Manor Nursing Home in Cynthiana. He was a retired truck driver with OK Trucking Co. and a retired Northfield Oil Co. employee. He also was a member of Oddville United Methodist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Six Sayre; daughters, Starr Smith, Cindy Shantz and Lisa Grubb, all of Harrison County; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oddville Cemetery. Katherine F. Shorey, 83, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Fort Mitchell, died June 7 in Venice. She was a secretary with Unity Church of Venice.
Survivors include daughters, Susan Carroll of Erlanger, Karen Hawking of Burlington and Pamela Threnhauser of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Arthur W. Small, 70, of Erlanger, died Monday at his home. He was a retired employee of Miami Systems in Cincinnati, and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Sacksteder Small; daughters, Karen Sandker of Cincinnati, Connie Neiheisel of Villa Hills and Cindy Mihalovich of Edgewood; a son, James Small of Fort Wright; sisters, Mary Ann Herringer and Eleanor Waldmann, both of Columbus, Ohio, and Virginia Hanby of Oil City, Pa.; brothers, Willard Small of Cincinnati and Robert Small of Fort Thomas; and six grandchildren.

Mary Emily Sowle, 69, of Burlington, died Monday at her home. She was a retired probation officer with Boone County and a former employee of the Metropolitan Housing Authority, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her mother, Alice M. Sowle of Florence; sisters, Sandra Sweeney and Deborah Kaulig, both of Cincinnati.
