Lena Merritt, 83, retired housekeeper
Lena Goodin Anderson Merritt didn't let hardships slow her down.
Born in Harlan, Mrs. Merritt grew up during the Depression and found herself with a large family to raise at an early age.
But whether working in factories or for hospitals, Mrs. Merritt found joy in life, said a son, Dayton Merritt of Covington.
"My mother was very independent and worked until she was 80," Merritt said.
"I never knew her to miss a day. I'd like to think that her values and beliefs live on in her children."
Mrs. Merritt, 83, of Covington, died at 7:47 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
She was a retired housekeeper with St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington and was a retired caregiver with Senior Services of Northern Kentucky.
Her husband, Howard Thomas Merritt, died in 1973.
Four children also preceded her in death.
Merritt said his mother was opinionated but patient.
She encouraged her children to go to work or to college and enjoyed raising a garden.
"My mother was an open and truthful person. But no matter what you had done, she was very loving. She was accepting of all," Merritt said.
"We would like all of her friends to know that we are grateful we could share her with them."
Survivors include another son George Merritt of Cincinnati; daughters, Sherma Jean Dunn of Fairfield, Ohio, Joyce Blakey of Edgewood, Doris Moore of Park Hills, Janet Hassan and Nancy Merritt, both of Covington, Joann Blanton and Judith Merritt, both of Newport; brothers, Robert Goodin of Fort Thomas and Dayton Goodin of Owenton; a sister, Hazel Hensley of Detroit; 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Rollin R. BoCook, 73, of Louisville, formerly of Covington, died Sunday at Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville.
He was a retired master sergeant with the Army Judge Advocate General, and was a former manager with American Home Supply.
He was a member of Bullitt County Rod and Gun Club and the Eagles Club, and was a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Ella Mae BoCook; and a sister, Catherine McWilliams.
Services were Wednesday at O. D. White and Sons Funeral Home, Louisville.
Burial was in Lebanon National Cemetery, Marion County.
Fay C. Lail, 92, of Brooksville, died Wednesday at Maysville Extended Care Center.
He was a farmer, a member of Brooksville Assembly of God and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a nephew, Melvin Lail, with whom he lived.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville.
Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery.
Bertha Owens, 81, of Newport, died at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include daughters, Rosie MacCarver of Orange County, Texas, Violet Garneau of Falmouth, Linda Paynter of Cold Spring, Wanda Lawrence of Aurora, Ind., and Darlene Cullum of Newport; sons, John R. Owens of Independence, Jerry Lee Owens of Morehead, George E. Owens of Latonia, Tim E. Owens of Florence and Joseph "Bill" Owens of Newport; a sister, Florence Miller of Newport; a brother, Harry Ashcraft of Dayton; a stepbrother, Jim Ashcraft of Falmouth; 34 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Agnes "Rose" Redmond, 74, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Covington, died Tuesday in San Diego.
She was a manager of the RCA Record Club.
Her husband, Robert Duffy Redmond, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Judy Ivie of San Diego and Janie Beckham of Dayton, Ohio; a son, Robert Duffy Redmond Jr. of Minnesota; a brother, James Scott Judyof Louisville; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego.

Dimple Musselman Sheriff, 98, of Williamstown, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County in Williamstown.
She was a member of Williamstown Christian Church and a former school teacher with Mason County Schools.
She also operated the Federal Land Bank, Williamstown.
Her husband, Carl Sheriff, died in 1964.
Survivors include cousins.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday.
Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Thelma Spegal, 69, of Burlington, died Thursday at her home.
Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
