Eugene Schulkers: a gentle life
Eugene Schulkers was the grandfather of his Dayton neighborhood. He made Easter baskets for the children. He drove neighbors to the doctor. He remembered children's birthdays. A few weeks ago he took a neighbor's grandchildren fishing.
Mr. Schulkers, 80, died Wednesday from injuries received when he was beaten by two men in Taylor Park in Newport on June 5. His death was violent, but it was the gentleness of Mr. Schulkers' life that family and friends remembered this week.
"He was a sweet, dear man," said his daughter-in-law, Luann Schulkers of Erlanger.
He looked out for other people; he listened to children, and he cherished friends and family.
Mr. Schulkers married
Helen Merret on July 1, 1942, and was inducted into the Army that September. He was a World War II Army veteran of Italy, France and Germany. When he returned, he became a machinist for R.K. LeBlond Machine Co. in Cincinnati, where he worked for 42 years. He and his wife raised four children in Dayton.
"He taught us the value of friendship," said his daughter, Lenora "Sis" Mocciola of Dayton.
"If somebody needed something and he could help, he would. People liked him. He was just fun to be around."
Mr. Schulkers was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Dayton and bowled in an Eagles league. He was active with the local senior center, and every year he put in a garden, growing to matoes and his favorite hot peppers.
